Church members attend extreme camps

The T.A.G. Teen Ministry at the Word of God Church recently attended Extreme Camps.
"We had a glorious time with five days of spiritual exhortation, feeding of the Word, exalting our Lord and showing the love of God to our brothers and sisters in Christ and the lost at camp. We had a commitment as a ministry together to unify in one mind, one heart, and one spirit," said Pastor Dale Stowe.

Scam hits locally

Phone scams, unfortunately, are continuing to target the region, but this time the calls are being made from international areas.
Elsie Armstead of Roscoe shared her experience of an attempted phone scam, noting that the call came up as "Kingston Jim" on her Caller ID. However, she said that the name is a cover-up for Kingston, Jamaica, the capital of the country.

Fire rekindles, burns 45 more acres

A fire that burned 20 acres on Wednesday near County Road 143 and County Road 144 rekindled on Thursday and firefighters battled the blaze until about midnight on Thursday. They continued to monitor the fire on Friday morning as well.
Battling the blaze were the Sweetwater Fire Department, Texas Forest Service, Maryneal Volunteer Fire Department, Nolan Volunteer Fire Department and Lake Sweetwater Volunteer Fire Department.

Highland ISD accepting ballot applications

Applications are currently being accepted for a place on the Highland ISD General Election Ballot. The filing period began on July 21, 2012 and will continue through August 20, 2012.  Applications are available in the Superintendent’s office and may be picked up and/or dropped off between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 50 calls for service, issued no citations and made five arrests on Aug. 1, 2012.

The SPD received 29, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Fraud — Sweetwater area.
• Theft — 300 block of E. Broadway.

Arrested by SPD:
• Victor Fields, 29 — Criminal trespass.
• Charles McLarty, 58 — Driving while intoxicated/evading.
• Julian Cuellar, 29 — Family violence assault.
• Bobby Rayson, 50 — Warrants.
• Francisco Solis, 19 — Public intoxication.

In no particular order: Christopher Faith, Gavin Reyes, Carson Brownlow, Kurt Wetsel, Trenton Hicks...
