Special driving course offered to teachers, personnel

AARP Driver Safety Program is giving a special offer to all teachers and personnel employed by the school system, as well as all who are retired, to take the Driver Safety Course for $5.
The course is good for three years and those who complete the course could get up to 10% off on car insurance. Call your insurance agent for information as to how much you could save.
Sweetwater Independent School District is sponsoring the classes which will be held on Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at the Sweetwater High School. The building is located at the corner of Crane and 12th Street.

Two dogs available for adoption

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has two dogs available for adoption.
Available for adoption is a female border collie mix and a female boxer mix. According to Sweetwater’s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.

Sweetwater ISD School Supply List 2012-2013

The supply list for Sweetwater Independent School District has been updated. Notice that hand sanitizer and wipes have been removed from the list. Parents are asked to not send these products to school with their children. Children should be monitored when using products that contain alcohol because it poses a possible health risk to them. In order to provide children with a safe and healthy learning environment, automatic hand sanitizer dispensers have been installed in multiple locations on every campus and their use will be monitored by teachers.

Two area crashes claim lives

Two area crashes claimed the lives of two area residents on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2012.
At 1:36 a.m. on Saturday, Sammy Ken Castillo, 39, of Snyder, was driving a 2003 Yamaha motorcycle east bound on County Road 4114 in Scurry County. At the intersection of County Road 4114 and County Road 4129, the driver lost control and the vehicle left the roadway and overturned. Castillo was pronounced dead at the scene by Judge Jule Culp at 2:04 a.m. His body was taken to Wright Colonial Funeral Home in Snyder. The next of kin have been notified. Castillo was not wearing a helmet.
