Food service preparing for incoming school year

Sweetwater Independent School District Food Service Secretary Deanna Clowers and SISD Food Service Director Barbara Woolsey are shown preparing a grocery order the coming school year that will begin Monday, Aug. 27, 2012.
Starting this school year, school districts nationwide must meet new standards of nutrition for meals as part of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, which strives to provide all children with healthy school food.

Four dogs available for adoption

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has four dogs available for adoption.
Available for adoption is a male Husky/Shepherd mix, a female border collie mix, a male chihuahua and a male mixed breed dog. According to Sweetwater’s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.

WASP presents construction plans to the city

During the City Commission meeting held on Tuesday morning, August 21, a representative of the WASP (Women's AirForce Service Pilots) Museum gave a presentation on the proposed new construction that will expand the facilities.
A handout was given to the commissioners, which offered an outlook on the future of the facility and ideas on potential exhibits. At the present time, the museum is working with an architect and architect manager, both based out of the Dallas area.

Greetings everyone! We are looking forward to this Sunday, Aug. 26. It will be Sunday School High Attendance day. Also, it is Red Shirt Sunday. Everyone wear your red shirt! We will have donuts and coffee for breakfast. Then we will have lunch at the church following the morning worship service. TSTC Sweetwater admissions will be open this weekend for registration

To better meet the needs of potential students, the Texas State Technical College Sweetwater admissions office will be available evenings and weekends through Wednesday, Aug. 29. The office will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., including this Saturday and Sunday.

Children raise money for food pantry

A group of cousins recently got together to raise money for a good cause. Two six-year-olds, Talan Yowell and Makenzie Ince, along with three-year-old Emma Ince, manned a lemonade stand on Morris Street in Sweetwater earlier this week. All of their proceeds went to Gaylord's Pantry, the food pantry at First United Methodist Church in Sweetwater.

Highland Heights donates school supplies

Highland Heights United Methodist Church recently consecrated 14 sets of school supplies for needy second and third graders at East Ridge Elementary. They were delivered to the campus the following Monday.

Rain chances will be with us all weekend in Sweetwater, as today calls for a 30% chance of showers and thunderstorms. The high will be near 93 with partly sunny skies and winds from the south at 15 mph. Gusts will be as high as 25 mph.
Friday night, expect a 20% chance of precipitation with mostly cloudy skies and a low around 72. Winds will remain at the south around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
On Saturday, the 20% chance of rain and thunderstorms continue with a high near 94. We'll see partly sunny skies and south-southeast winds at 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
