Nolan County SWCD makes donation to KOL program

In September 2012, Katherine Dickson and her family opened the gates of the 69 Ranch near Maryneal to fourth grade students from Roscoe, Highland and Blackwell to engage them in the Kids on the Land (KOL) program. Peggy Maddox, former Sweetwater Independent School District SEEK teacher and now Director of Kids of the Land program for Holistic Management International developed the program which provides a day of hands-on activities to help students reconnect to the land where they live.

Local, nationally recognized musician garners overseas success

A singer/songwriter with local ties--who made it big on the national circuit--is making an international resurgence.
Royce Porter was born on April 1, 1939 in Roscoe but was raised in Sweetwater. He graduated Newman High School in 1957 and immediately pursued his dream, moving to Houston to record some albums with his friend and fellow Sweetwater resident, the late Ray Doggett.
However, in 1958 he was drafted into the Navy and served for the next two years. Following his military service, Porter returned to Sweetwater and then attended college at Hardin-Simmons University from 1964-1968.

Annual Jamaica held Sunday

The annual Jamaica (pronounced Hah-my-kah) festival at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Sweetwater raised funds for the parish on Sunday, Sept. 2, 2012. The event featured an array of food, refreshments, games for all ages and music. Shown is Braelyn Gaytan fishing for a prize at one of the booths at the Jamaica. Running the booth were Carolyn Flores and Sierra Flores.
