2012-2013 Future Sweetwater class begins

The Future Sweetwater class of 2012-2013 gathered for their first day on Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2012 at the Texas State Technical College Center.

Testing, retention discussed at SISD meeting

A local regulation regarding retests on the new STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) exams was discussed during the Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District) Board of Trustees' meeting on Monday evening, September 17 at the Administration Building.
Last year, the district examined retention and the impact it made within the district. Several years ago, a policy was passed--in accordance to state guidelines--which determined passing and testing requirements for some grade levels.

Four dogs available for adoption

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has four dogs available for adoption.
Available for adoption is a female dachshund mix, a male shih-tzu mix, a female chihuahua mix and a female Chinese crested. According to Sweetwater’s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 48 calls for service, issued two citations and made six arrests on Sept. 18, 2012.

The SPD received 10, 911 calls.

• Burglary of a building — I-20.
• Burglary of a building/vehicle — 400 block of E. Arizona.

Arrested by SPD:
• Robert Plemons, 28 — Warrants.
• Jennifer Hernandez, 30 — Warrants.
• Andron Rains, 22 — Warrants.
• Michael Hernandez, 22 — Warrants.
• Morgan Taylor, 18 — Warrants.
• Santiago Muñoz, 29 — Public intoxication.

Fire Up the Flavor

Caribbean Pork Kabobs
Serves: 9
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cooking Time: 10 to 15 minutes
1/2 cup pineapple juice
3 tablespoons Mrs. Dash® Caribbean Citrus Seasoning Blend, divided
1 pound pork tenderloin, cut into small cubes
1 sweet onion, cut into cubes
1 red bell pepper, cut into cubes
1/2 fresh pineapple, peeled, cut into cubes
Mix pineapple juice and 2 tablespoons seasoning blend in a small bowl.
Pour 3/8 cup (6 tablespoons) of the pineapple juice mix­ture over the pork in a separate bowl and the remaining over the vegetables. Stir to coat evenly.

Grandparents Lunch held at East Ridge

National Grandparents Day was on Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012, this year and to honor grandparents, Sweetwater Independent School District hosts special lunches at different schools where grandparents eat with their grandchildren.

TSTC West Texas awarded Military Friendly Schools title for third straight year

Texas State Technical College West Texas has been named to the coveted Military Friendly Schools list for the third straight year. The 2013 Military Friendly Schools list honors the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members, veterans and spouses as students and ensure their success on campus.
“Inclusion on the 2013 list of Military Friendly Schools shows TSTC West Texas’ commitment to providing a supportive environment for military students,” said Sean Collins, Director for G.I. Jobs.

Apple Creek shooting suspect sought

According to Sweetwater Chief of Police Brian Frieda, a man has been identified as a suspect in the shooting that took place at Apple Creek Apartments on Grand Avenue in Sweetwater earlier this month. "We have not been successful in locating this individual.

Area receives rain

Nolan County has recently seen some rainfall in the area.
On Sept. 15-16, 2012, Oak Creek received 0.20 inches of rain, Lake Trammell received 0.23 inches of rain and Lake Sweetwater received 0.23 inches of rain. For 2012, Oak Creek has received 17.21 inches of rain, while Lake Trammell has received 17.73 inches of rain and Lake Sweetwater has received 17.59 inches of rain.
The filter plant received 0.22 inches of rain with its total for the year at 15.44 inches of rain.
Booster B has received 16.14 inches of rain for the year, with 0.25 of those inches this past week.
