The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 43 calls for service, issued seven citations and made zero arrests on Feb. 20, 2012.

The SPD received 14, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Information — 800 block of Hill.
• Information — Sweetwater area.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 36 calls for service, served one civil paper and made four arrests from Feb. 17-20, 2012.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Maurice Earl Oler, 42, of Abilene — Warrant/theft by check.
• Jimmy Gene Willett, 19, of Snyder — Bench warrant.

Several protest at courthouse

February 21, 2012

Several family members and friends of an alleged sexual assault victim held signs and protested at the Nolan County Courthouse on Tuesday morning, Feb. 21, 2012.
One sign read, "My name is Fonda Balthrop. My daughter was sexually abused. There was no justice. Still to this day I sit and watch her suffer. All I wanted was Justice! It hurts me to see the pain in her eyes when she asked, 'Mommy why don't the POLICE HELP ME?'"

Coley visits Roscoe Co-op

Chuck Coley, pictured next to Larry Black (far left), visited the Central Rolling Plains Co-op in Roscoe, Texas on Monday, Feb. 20, 2012. Coley, of Vienna, Georgia, is a producer/ginner that was elected National Cotton Council (NCC) chairman for 2012. He was named during the NCC's annual meeting in Fort Worth on Feb. 10. He will be speaking at the Abilene Farm and Ranch Show today, Feb. 21.

Mustang Band wins solo awards

Last Saturday the Sweetwater High School Mustang Band participated in the UIL Region Solo and Ensemble Contest at Abilene High School. Sweetwater earned more solo medals than any other AAA, AA or A school at the competition. Twenty student musicians made 1’s on their solos.

Where’s the beef?

February 21, 2012

Just after midnight Friday morning, Feb. 18, 2012, an 18-wheeler and four other vehicles were involved in a wreck 25 miles south of Sweetwater on Highway 153. No injuries were reported in the wreck. The driver of the 18-wheeler was hauling beef from Amarillo to the San Antonio area.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 126 calls for service, issued eight citations and made two arrests from Feb. 17-19, 2012.

The SPD received 52, 911 calls.
Accidents:
• 400 block of E. Arizona.
• 1600 block of Lamar.

Calls for service:
• Deadly conduct — 300 block of NE Georgia.
• Theft — 300 block of SE Georgia.
• Criminal trespass — 900 block of Walnut.
• Criminal mischief — 300 block of Patterson.

Arrested by SPD:
• Eric Brown, 23 — Indictment warrant.
• Jeffery Williams, 32 — Indictment warrant.

Multiple cars wreck

On Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012, just before 2 p.m. there were two wrecks near the 255 mile marker close to the Adrian Road bridge. One car lost control, crossed the center barrier and was hit multiple times by oncoming traffic including an 18-wheeler in the west bound lanes. On the east bound side, a car swerved to miss debris and rolled over. There were a number of cars involved on that side as well. 

Stray shot hits car

A woman's back windshield was hit by a stray bullet on Friday evening, Feb. 17, 2012, in the Cato parking lot in Sweetwater.
According to Lt. Randy Hanes with the Sweetwater Police Department, police received a call regarding shots fired in the parking lot. Two officers were in the area near the Hampton Inn in Sweetwater and heard the shots. According to Hanes, the officers heard the multiple shots coming from the southeast, behind the Hampton Inn. It is believed that the shots were simply stray bullets from shots fired by someone hunting or discharging their firearm.

Roscoe, Sweetwater alumni to live a dream

The third round of Texas Alumni Football for the area will be here in April, but this time, it will make dreams come true for many Roscoe and Sweetwater alumni.
Former high school players from Roscoe and Sweetwater have teamed up to form a team and live out this dream. The dream? Playing a game of football at Cowboys Stadium.
The games are open to all alumni of the Roscoe/Sweetwater area and the ages of the players will likely range from nineteen to mid-forties. The alumni team will play another alumni team from Commerce, a 3A school, northeast of Dallas.

Ribbon cutting held for Sweetwater Auto-Tire

Big Boys Barbecue catered an Open House event for Sweetwater Auto-Tire’s new location at 700 E. Broadway from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 17, 2012. A ribbon cutting was held prior to the Open House with Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors present to congratulate the business on their new location. At the event were owners, Bill and Candy Jones, manager Manny Gutierrez, assistant manager Tommy Warner, clerk Irene Mendoza and Brittainy Minton.
