RPMH offers free cholesterol screening

February is American Heart Month. To observe this occasion Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital will be at the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department (SNCHD), located at 301 E. 12th, on Thursday, Feb. 23 from 8:30-11:30 a.m. to offer free cholesterol screening. There will be pamphlets and information available on cholesterol. SNCHD stresses the importance of good health and encourages the community to take advantage of the monthly events that are sponsored each month.
The health department will be closed on Monday, Feb. 20 for President’s Day.

The SPD received 89, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon — 200 block of E. Fourth.
• Criminal mischief — 500 block of W. New Mexico.
• Information only — 1500 block of McCaulley.
• Theft — 2000 block of E. Broadway.

Arrested by SPD:
• Israel Salazar, 21 — Family violence assault.
• Eloy Gomez, 32 — Warrant.

Java Jax hosts Miss Snake Charmer Tea

The 2012 Miss Snake Charmer Tea was held at Java Jax on Sunday, Feb. 12. Thirteen contestants will be competing for the title of Miss Snake Charmer 2012. RPMH to promote heart wellness through 24-Hour Treadmill Walkathon

SWEETWATER, Texas — While heart-shaped candy and decorations can be seen everywhere for upcoming Valentine’s Day, February is also designated as American Heart Month, an effort to raise awareness of cardiovascular diseases. Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) is joining the nationwide awareness program with a 24-hour treadmill walkathon that will begin at 5 p.m. on Feb. 17, at the RPMH Cardiac Rehabilitation Center.

Three dogs available for adoption

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has three dogs available for adoption.
One of the adoptable pets is a female basset hound mix. Also available are a female Irish Setter and her male puppy.
According to Sweetwater’s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.

CARR, Chamber to furnish shuttle at Round-Up

The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce will again be furnishing a shuttle bus that will travel to the Nolan County Coliseum from the hotels and motels, Saturday, March 10 and Sunday, March 11 during the Rattlesnake Round-Up.
City and Rural Rides (CARR) will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday and continue every hour until the last pick up is made at the Coliseum at 5 p.m. On Sunday, the shuttle will start at 9 a.m. and run every hour until the last pick up at the Coliseum at 4 p.m. There is no charge for riding the shuttle.

The SPD received 89, 911 calls.

• Burglary of a habitation — 1000 block of W. Sixth.

Arrested by SPD:
• Kathryn Gray, 58 — Driving while intoxicated.
• Myshella Henderson, 20 — Warrant.
• Eric Martinez, 25 — Warrant.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 48 calls for service, served seven civil papers and made two arrests from Feb. 10-12, 2012.

No serious injuries in accidents

Sweetwater Emergency Services responded to a wreck on Thursday evening, Feb. 9, 2012, north of Roscoe. A student fell asleep and rolled into the culvert.
"She was banged up but not seriously injured," said Sweetwater Emergency Services Director Grant Madden. "We did not transport her to the hospital," he added.

Water demand to increase, conservation tips offered

The Nolan County West Texas Groundwater Conservation District is offering "water smart tips" for water efficiency in and around the home.
The Texas State Water Plan, from the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB), projects that by 2050, the state's population will increase by 90%, bringing total municipal water demand to increase by 67%.
And even though water savings projected by conservation will stand at 13.5% by that time, only 75% of the projected water demand will meet the water supply from existing sources.

All-State concert makes a memory

Last Saturday Sweetwater High School Band member Crysten Ivy gave the performance of a lifetime, performing with the Texas All-State Band in San Antonio. The concert was witnessed by an enthusiastic audience of several thousand music educators, family members and supporters. It was the culmination of the annual Texas Music Educators Convention, which involves more than 10,000 elementary music teachers and band, choir and orchestra directors.
