During the short days and cold nights of winter, many of us crave comfort foods. Unfortunately, the rich dishes we usually think of tend to be low in nutrition and packed with fat and calories. Well, take heart. Itâ€™s possible to enjoy satisfying dishes that are tasty, hearty and nutritious.
The annual Sweetwater Jaycees Miss Snake Charmer Scholarship Pageant is a time where young ladies from throughout the Big Country come together to compete for scholarship money. At last year's pageant, past queens were recognized for the 52nd year of the Miss Snake Charmer Pageant.
The annual pageant will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 8, at the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium. The pageant is open to all girls between the ages of 16-19 who live within a 75 mile radius of Sweetwater.
The SISD (Sweetwater Independent School District) Board of Trustees were recognized at their regular meeting on Monday evening, Jan. 23, 2012.
As this month has been named School Board Recognition Month in Sweetwater, Nolan County Judge Tim Fambrough was in attendance to read the proclamation to the board members. The document praised their commitment to children and their education; the ongoing work with parents, staff and community members; establishing a firm foundation in local education; and supporting local and public education for the district.
Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Dennis Cumbie, announced that sign-up for the 2012 Direct and Counter-cyclical Program (DCP) and the Average Crop Revenue Election (ACRE) Program began on Jan. 23, 2012 and continues through June 1, 2012.
"I encourage producers to make an appointment with our office to sign-up for program benefits," said Cumbie.
Waco, Texas â€”Â Texas Farmers Union delegates and members will convene for the 110th State Convention at the Menger Hotel in San Antonio, Texas. The convention will run Jan. 27 and 28, 2012, and will start at 1 p.m. on Friday, the 27th.
Texas Farmers Union President Wes Sims stated, "We will have a number of interesting speakers and programs. One of the speakers will be National Farmers Union President Roger Johnson, who will be speaking at the banquet on Saturday night."
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 50 calls for service, issued no citations and made four arrests on Jan. 24, 2012.
The SPD received 20, 911 calls.

The Nolan County Commissioners announced their selection of an architect for the new county jail and courthouse improvements during their meeting on Monday morning, Jan. 23, 2012.
Chosen for the project was the Wiginton Hooker Jeffry Architect firm, a Dallas-based company. Before the announcement was made, Precinct 4 Commissioner Tony Lara thanked those who made presentations to the commissioners â€” some who were in attendance â€” for their time and professionalism during the process.
This yearâ€™s Future Sweetwater class learned about our local economy on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012, beginning at the Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development office to speak with Ken Becker, SEED Executive Director. The Nolan County Livestock Show was held Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012 through Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012.
The goat, rabbit and broiler shows took place on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012 and the swine show took place on Friday, Jan. 20, 2012. The results from these shows are as follows:

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has five dogs available for adoption.
One of the adoptable pets is a tan female Labrador mix. Also available are two puppies, one male Husky mix and one male pit bull mix (shown). Also available from last week are two female mixed breed dogs, one white and one brown. According to Sweetwater's animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
