Three dogs available for adoption

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has three dogs available for adoption.
One of the adoptable pets is a male catahoula mix. Also available are two female mixed breed dogs, one white and one brown. According to Sweetwater's animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 34 calls for service, issued one citation and made three arrests on Jan. 18, 2012.

The SPD received 20, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Family violence assault — 1100 block of Crane.
• Theft — 900 block of Circle Drive.
• Theft — 1300 block of James.

Arrested by SPD:
• Jason Ben Anderton, 18 — Felony warrant.
• Byron Blueford, 23 — City warrant and county warrant.
• Tracy Huddleston, 29 — Duty on striking an unattended vehicle.

School board trustees honored with proclamation

Nolan County Commissioners and Nolan County Judge Tim Fambrough recently signed a proclamation designating January as School Board Appreciation Month in Nolan County.
The proclamation stated that the mission of the public schools is to meet the diverse educational needs of all children and to empower them to become competent, productive contributors to a democratic society and an ever-changing world.

Deaf Action Center offers presentation

Representatives from the Deaf Action Center (DAC) in Abilene will be at the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department on Thursday, Jan. 26 at 2 p.m. to talk about their services. The DAC serves people who are deaf and hard of hearing with a comprehensive range of services. They will educate and train people in coping and communication strategies, assistive devices and Relay Texas Service and more. DAC assists the hard of hearing, deaf, deaf/blind, vision impaired, speech impaired and mobility impaired, in receiving free communication devices from the State of Texas.

Brookshire’s donates to Sweetwater Goodfellows

The local Brookshire’s grocery store recently donated $250 to the Sweetwater Goodfellows. Brookshire’s employees won the money in a competition against other Brookshire’s grocery stores for community service hours worked by employees. Statewide gas price average increases one cent

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Texas is one cent more than the average last week, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.  The current statewide average is $3.23.

Grand Jury indicts 16

January 18, 2012

The Nolan County Grand Jury handed down 16 indictments, 14 of which were sealed.
Sarah Hernandez was indicted for possession of marijuana, a state jail felony. The indictment states that Hernandez possessed a usable quantity of marijuana in the amount of five pounds or less, but more than four ounces on Nov. 26, 2011. Her bond was set at $5,000.
Vanessa Lashell Lynch was indicted for driving while intoxicated, a third degree felony. The indictment states that Lynch operated a motor vehicle on Nov. 12, 2011, while intoxicated.

Steers to kick off stock show

Shown are Sweetwater Intermediate School fourth grader Zoee Jeffrey and Sweetwater Intermediate School fifth grader Julia Rees, combing their steers during weigh-in on Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012. Today from 1-7 p.m. will be the swine weigh-in and all other animals will be weighed in from 4-7 p.m. The steer show will begin at 6 p.m. and the heifer show will follow the steer show tonight. The Nolan County Livestock Show will continue throughout the week.
