East Ridge Elementary School third grade teacher, Jimmy Bennett, was voted by his peers in Region 14 as the 2013 Elementary Teacher of the Year.
He, his wife Lesley and the principal of the school, Vicki Mayberry were recently in Austin for the awards ceremonies. Commissioner of Education Michael L. Williams spoke at the ceremony and presented Mr. Bennett this prestigious award.

In the event of an emergency, the Sweetwater Nolan County Health Department is responsible for providing mass vaccinations and medications (both oral and injectable) to the entire population of both Nolan and Fisher Counties. Whether it is a bioterrorist attack or a natural occurring pandemic, the health department must be prepared to medicate or inoculate all residents within 36 hours. Ongoing planning and practice is essential and required in order to protect the community in the event of a disaster.
The cold season is approaching. Warm the hearts and hands of children by donating new or gently used coats and gloves. Since 2004, Bahlman Cleaners has collected over 1,000 gently worn winter garments for men, women and children who otherwise would be without one, according to owner Janice Pridemore. Bahlman's mission is simple: anyone in the region in need of a coats shall receive one if possible.
Broadway Baptist Church will be holding their annual fall event, Treatsville, on Thursday night, Oct. 31 from 6-8 p.m. at the Family Center. The church is located at 710 E. Third in Sweetwater.
Treatsville provides families throughout the community with a fun yet safe event to attend on Halloween night. A "trunk or treat" line will be stationed in the parking lot, along with a face painting booth by Gospel Ministries to Children from San Angelo.
Andrea Croan has been promoted to Circulation Manager at the Sweetwater Reporter. Croan first joined the Sweetwater Reporter's circulation department in March 2013, just after the Rattlesnake Round-Up, and has been a welcome addition to the newspaper family. Born and raised in Sweetwater, Croan lives here with her four children â€” Racheal, 16; Dylan, 15; Katelyn, 8; and William, 2.
The Sweetwater Round-Up for Rehab event is a fun opportunity to once again to help out patients at the West Texas Rehabilitation Center, some of whom are from this area. Itâ€™s the annual Round-Up for Rehab in Sweetwater that raises much-needed funds for the REHAB Center. The Shrimp Peel dinner and auction will be held at the Sweetwater Country Club, on Tuesday evening, Oct. 29.
Last yearâ€™s event raised a record $62,260.
Highland Heights United Methodist Church recently consecrated and delivered a collection of 52 pieces of luggage and bags, 90 rolls of toilet tissue, 20 rolls of paper towels, paper plates and cups, facial tissue, dishwashing detergent, toilet bowl cleaner, bars of soap, tooth brushes, wash cloths and bath towels to Gateway Family Services.
Gateway ministers to individuals involved in family violence and sexual assault in five counties, Scurry, Nolan, Mitchell, Fisher and Kent.
