Milestone year for TMCN

Sweetwater is a member of Texas Midwest Community Network. The organization will host the 20th Annual Texas Midwest Conference on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at the Abilene Civic Center. The event kicks off a milestone year for the organization with the theme “Making a Difference.” It will be a day of celebrating local leaders who are making a difference in their communities. Chamber of Commerce Executive Vice President Leah Andrews and Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development (SEED) Executive Director Ken Becker represent Sweetwater on the TMCN Council.

Woman’s Forum begins annual ticket sales

Sweetwater's Woman's Forum is kicking off their annual holiday give away today. The monies raised will be used for their Civic Improvement and Beautification program.
Pictured is Richard Fergeson of State Farm Insurance who bought the first ticket, sold by chairperson Lita McEachern. He now has a chance to win a 50' LED color TV, iPad or a laptop computer.
The drawing will be held at the Christmas Craft Show at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8, at the Nolan County Coliseum. Tickets are $1 and are being sold by any member of Woman's Forum beginning today and ending at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8.

Officials break ground for new jail

City and county officials, along with many in the community were on hand on Monday afternoon to break ground on the new jail and Sheriff's Office at 211 Avenger Field Road.
The facility will include a county jail with 96 beds along with a sheriff's office.

Roscoe to host Wind Festival

The West Texas Wind Festival will take place from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday in Roscoe. The event will have a kid's area with bounce houses, food and craft vendors, a Mud Bog, fireworks and live music including Rance Norton and the Cadillac Boys, country music legend Moe Bandy and Band, and other area bands. The Festival continues to grow each year and Roscoe looks forward to hosting the event. Food and craft vendor applications may be picked up at Roscoe City Hall (325-766-3871) or by calling Kelly Etheredge at 325-725-0756.

Today will be cloudy with a 50% chance of showers and thunderstorms. Temperatures will be falling all day to around 55 by 5 p.m. Winds will be from the west-northwest around 15 mph, becoming north in the afternoon.
Rain chances will drop down to 30% tonight, with cloudy conditions remaining and a low near 46. Winds will be from the north around 10 mph.

Students learning science in the great outdoors with Kids on the Land program

Recently, 122 students from Blackwell, Highland, and Roscoe visited the 69 Ranch for another day of hands-on learning with Kids On the Land volunteers. This is the third year for the program due to the generosity of the Dickson Family, Buzzi Unicem, Infigen Energy, Nolan County Soil and Water Conservation Board and Hydraulic Supply and Service Company. Others in the Maryneal community provided food and volunteers.

Melanie Martinez to perform at local Sweetest Day event

Melanie Martinez, a contestant from The Voice, will perform at the Municipal Auditorium with Kimberly Dunn and Kristine Mirelle Saturday, Oct. 19 for the Sweetest Day Benefit concert.
Martinez finished at #5 on last Fall’s season of The Voice as part of Adam Levine’s team. Levine said many times on the show that he liked her because her voice and style were unique. Her uniqueness was obvious from the beginning as she played a tambourine with her feet while she played the guitar, singing Britney Spears’, “Toxic” with her own softer, Indie approach to the song.

BCMRC to meet today

Pictured (standing, far right) is Scott Davis, retired United States Air Force and Sweetwater citizen, who taught “Verbal Judo” to members of the Big Country Medical Reserve Corps.
In a natural or man-made disaster where many citizens, especially children are involved, “Verbal Judo” is the means for calming a potentially volatile situation before it can manifest into physical violence. This kind of “conflict management” involves using posture, body language, tone of voice, choice of words and many more examples were given by Mr. Davis.

County to break ground on jail project Monday

Nolan County Sheriff David Warren gave an update on the county jail project during the Sweetwater Kiwanis Club meeting held on Wednesday at Broadway Baptist Church.
Construction at the new facility, located on 211 Avenger Field Road, began on Monday, Sept. 30. A groundbreaking has been set for Monday at 1:30 p.m.
The facility will include a county jail with 96 beds along with a sheriff's office. At this time, Nolan County is one of just a few counties that still has their jail within their courthouse.

One airman had a goal to deploy once before his career came to a close, another was scheduled to deploy in September but had to depart earlier because of a shortfall. Each was destined for this particular base in Southwest Asia.
Senior Master Sgt. Joseph Doss is a 22-year veteran deployed from the 452nd Civil Engineer Squadron at March Air Force Base, Calif. He's a traditional reservist who is getting ready to complete his military career. But he wanted to deploy at least once before that career was over.
