Familiar face joins the team

A familiar face has once again joined the team at the Sweetwater Reporter. Zela Armstrong, who was on the sales team nine years ago, has re-joined the advertising team for the local newspaper. She was hired as an advertising executive by new Publisher Glenn Stifflemire.
Armstrong has lived in Sweetwater since she was in the eighth grade and she and her husband of 27 years, Gary Armstrong, have one daughter, Staci Armstrong of Abilene, who is a Sweetwater High School and Hardin Simmons University graduate.

Free blood glucose tests offered at SNCHD

The Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital Diabetes Outreach Program will sponsor free blood sugar checks from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Thursday at the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department, located at 301 E. 12th Street.
Type 1 diabetes symptoms are frequent urination, unusual thirst, extreme hunger, unusual weight loss, extreme fatigue and irritability.

Mi Familias reopens after four years

After almost four years of being closed, Mi Familias Mexican restaurant, located on the corner of Alabama and Sam Houston Streets, has reopened its doors to the community.
Owner Adam Gomez says that on his grand opening day on Tuesday, it was like he had never closed. "My former customers were very happy to see me. It reminded me of how much I enjoyed doing this and how much I missed my customers."
Gomez said that on his last day of business almost four years ago, that the restaurant sold out of everything. "We couldn't even make you a bean burrito the last 15 minutes that we were open."

Circus in town tonight

The Magicland Circus will be in Sweetwater this evening with one show at 4:30 p.m. and another show at 7 p.m. at the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium.
The circus will bring magic, illusions, juggling, balancing, clowns and special characters such as Spongebob Squarepants and Buzz Lightyear among others to the Sweetwater audience. Advance tickets can be purchased from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today by calling 956-229-9177.

Task force to be established for airport improvements

Approval was given to appoint a special task force to examine potential improvements at Avenger Field during the Sweetwater City Commission meeting on Tuesday morning, January 8, 2013 at City Hall.
Addressing the commission was Bill Johnson, who has observed some safety issues at the airport, one of which deals with lighting.
With lights only at two spots of the airport at this time, he said that the lack of lighting could prove to be dangerous. The other concern noted was that of the pilot and passenger facilities and identities.

The SPD received 26, 911 calls.

Jennings guilty, given eight year sentence

Troy Ray Jennings was sentenced to eight years confinement in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice on Wednesday morning, January 9, in the 32nd Judicial District Court.
A day prior to his sentencing, a seven-woman, five-man jury found Jennings guilty of failure to comply as a sex offender on Tuesday, January 8.
According to court documents, Jennings failed to report his change of employment, which is required for registration with local law enforcement, due to a reportable conviction of aggravated sexual assault. The offense was reported as occurring on May 10, 2011.
