SFD extinguishes house fire

January 16, 2013

Members of the Sweetwater Fire Department were called to the 300 block of Hailey Street on Tuesday evening around 6:40 p.m. when an electrical problem caused a fire in a home.
The back portion of the house was burned and the entire house sustained heat and smoke damage. Everyone came out of the home safely.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 35 calls for service, issued no citations and made three arrests on Jan. 14, 2013.

The SPD received 11, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Criminal mischief — Unknown.

Arrested by SPD:
• Lynne Looby, 55 — City warrants.
• Troy Woodward, 26 — City warrants.
• Veronica Martinez, 35 — City warrants.
The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had five calls for service, served no civil papers and made one arrest on Jan. 14, 2013.

Blood drive planned for local resident

On Jan. 2, local resident Travis Glasgow was taken to the emergency room with a severe bloody nose, lasting about two hours. Glasgow has had bloody noses his whole life, but none that lasted that long.

City offices to close Monday

January 15, 2013

The City of Sweetwater business offices will be closed on Monday for the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.
There will be no residential trash pick-up on Monday, however, all services will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 22. The commercial route will run as scheduled all week. Residents are asked to please be patient, as the trucks and staff will be running one day behind, but will catch up during the week. Residents may realize a small delay.
The citizen's drop-off center and Type IV landfill will be closed on Monday and reopen at regularly scheduled hours on Tuesday, Jan. 22.

ONCOR makes United Way contribution

ONCOR recently made a contribution to the Nolan County United Way Campaign.
Pictured are Jim Clements with ONCOR and Kirby Andrews, Nolan County United Way Board Secretary. ONCOR is a top 10 contributor for NCUW every year.
"We thank them for their continued support and dedication to NCUW and the nine local agencies we support," said NCUW Executive Director Wendy Smartt.

County burn ban lifted at meeting

The burn ban for Nolan County was lifted on Monday morning during the county commissioners' meeting. The lift will remain in effect for the next two weeks or until the next meeting date.
With the recent precipitation that came to the area, it was reported that Roscoe and Blackwell each received about an inch of rainfall by their respective commissioners Terry Willman in Precinct 1 and Tommy White in Precinct 3.

TSTC Wind Technology receives donation to scholarship fund

Windpower Engineering and Development, a key component to the first-ever wind technician conference that took place at Texas State Technical College Sweetwater in November, recently donated $4,500 to TSTC’s Wind Technology scholarship fund.
Keith Plantier, Director of Energy Systems for TSTC West Texas said, “This donation to the scholarship fund will allow several students to achieve their dream of working in this booming field.”

One jailed after district court pleas

January 15, 2013

One person was jailed after entering two pleas to Judge Glen Harrison during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings on Monday.
Manuel Adames III was sentenced to six years confinement in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice after he pled true to revoking his probation.
He was originally put on probation for possession of a controlled substance, namely cocaine on Sept. 5, 2003. It was classified as a third degree felony. He was sentenced on Oct. 9, 2007.

The SPD received 49, 911 calls.

• Burglary of a vehicle — 800 block of E. Arizona.
• Criminal mischief — 1800 block of Hubbard.
• Burglary of a vehicle — 1800 block of Hubbard.
• Theft — 800 block of Circle Drive.

Arrested by SPD:
• John Wilkinson, 30 — Burglary of a building.
• Juan Jaramillo, 41 — Theft.
• Otis Williams, 46 — Family violence assault.
