Ken Becker, Executive Director of the Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development, was honored with the position of Chairman of the Board for the 2012-2013 program year. The gavel was passed at the 2012 High Ground of Texas Annual Membership Meeting. The meeting was held in Lubbock on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012.
Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District) recently received their scores from the STAAR (State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness) test, in which the district fared well in their tests for third through eighth grade students.
Out of the seventeen tests administered, Sweetwater ISD beat the state average in thirteen of those tests.
Two tests--4th grade writing and 7th grade reading--both came in 3% over the state's passing rate--at 74% and 79%, respectively. However, the other eleven tests saw averages anywhere from six to eighteen percent higher than the state passing rate.
On Jan. 2, local resident Travis Glasgow was taken to the emergency room with a severe bloody nose, lasting about two hours. Glasgow has had bloody noses his whole life, but none that lasted that long.
Expect warm temperatures today, with partly sunny skies and a high near 68. Winds will be from the south-southwest at 15 to 20 mph, shifting to the northwest in the afternoon. Gusts could be as high as 25 mph.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 40 calls for service, issued one citation and made no arrests on Jan. 31, 2013.
The SPD received 16, 911 calls.

â€˘ Family violence assault â€”Â 100 block of Alexander.
â€˘ Disruption of classroom â€”Â 300 block of Lamar.
The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had five calls for service, served no civil papers and made two arrests on Jan. 31, 2013.

Most any grandmother would tell you that spending time with her grandchildren is a blessing. And for Gayle Biggerstaff, the county treasurer, her decision to retire is largely based on that reasoning.
On her final day of work on Feb. 28, 2013, Biggerstaff will have served the county for twenty-six years and two months. She started working as the county treasurer on Jan. 1, 1987.

To that end, February 7-14 has been declared National Marriage Week. The goal of National Marriage week is to elevate attention on the need to strengthen marriages, initiate new efforts to reduce the divorce rate, and connect couples with the tools available to build stronger marriages.

The monthly meeting of the Republican Women of West Texas will be at the Pioneer Museum, located at 610 E. Third Street at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Guest speaker will be Jane Cansino of Lubbock. Refreshments will be served at 6 p.m. All interested parties are invited to attend.
