J.P. Cowen offers campus report at SISD meeting

During the Monday night meeting of the Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District) Board of Trustees, a campus report was given on J.P. Cowen Early Childhood Center.
Crystal Meneses, the principal of the school, began the presentation with the assistance of three students from the campus: Ryan Roberson, Rhylie Underwood and Owen Huckabee. They demonstrated to board members the different breathing techniques that are done at the school.

Expect mostly cloudy skies today, with a high only near 39. Winds will be high, as a west-northwestern wind will blow at 30 to 35 mph, increasing up to 35 to 40 mph. Gusts could top out at 55 mph.
Today, we also have a slight chance today for rain and snow, as precipitation chances stand at 20%.
Tonight will be partly cloudy with a low around 29. High winds will continue from the west-northwest at 30 to 40 mph, decreasing to 10 to 20 mph. However, gusts could still reach as high as 55 mph.

Young Guns are champs at Midland tournament

The Sweetwater Young Guns 11-and-under travel team won the championship at the Midland Winter Blast tournament, a Global Sports World Series Qualifier event which was played on Feb. 16-17 as part of Texas USSSA Baseball. Another big win

The Highland girls basketball team celebrated on Friday after their 55-37 victory over Baird that advanced the Lady Hornets to the Region II-A, D-II final against Garden City on Saturday. Friday’s win put Highland within one game of advancing to Austin to play in the state tournament later this week. A story on Friday’s game is on Page A6. A story on Saturday’s game will be in Monday’s paper.

Media Day begins Round-Up events

2013 Media Day for the Sweetwater Jaycees World's Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up was held on Friday, at the local Fortin Ranch. The Miss Snake Charmer Pageant contestants beheaded and skinned Western Diamondback Rattlesnakes and members of the Sweetwater Jaycees gave demonstrations about the snakes including safety tips when coming into contact with the snakes. The Miss Snake Charmer Scholarship Pageant will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 7. The Sweetwater Jaycees World’s Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up will be from Friday, March 8 through Sunday, March 10.

NCF sets $33K goal for scholarship golf classic

Members of the Nolan County Foundation Board announce their annual Golf Classic for Scholarships for Nolan County high school graduates has set a goal of raising $33,000 from its April 20, 2013 golf scramble. This event is scheduled for a 9 a.m. tee time at the Sweetwater Country Club.
In reaching this goal, the NCF will have awarded 200 scholarships of $1,000 each for Nolan County high school graduates to start their college careers at any Texas college or university. This year's golf scramble will be the ninth consecutive year for this worthwhile event.

New ordinance relating to food vendors

The Sweetwater Jaycees Rattlesnake Round-Up is approaching fast, bringing many food vendors to town. Individuals and organizations cannot sell food to the public without a county health permit as required by State and County law. A new ordinance went into effective last November requiring all food vendors to renew permits yearly. This means food vendors at the Round-Up must fill out a new permit application prior to their inspection.

CARR, Chamber to furnish shuttle at Rattlesnake Round-Up

The date of the Sweetwater Jaycee’s World’s Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up, Sweetwater Rifle & Pistol Club Gun Knife & Coin Show is fast approaching. The citizens of Sweetwater will welcome about 30,000 tourists during March 8-10.
The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce is again furnishing a shuttle bus that will travel between the hotels, K-Mart parking lot and the Nolan County Coliseum. There will be a time schedule posted in each hotel and inside each bus.
