Each year, the Worldâ€™s Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up attracts more than 20,000 visitors to Sweetwater. For the past 55 years, the event has been a means for locals to protect livestock by controlling the snake population as they begin to emerge from winter hibernation.
As participants and visitors participate in the Round-up, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) seeks to raise awareness of how people should respond to snakebites during the weekend and throughout the year.
A Sweetwater woman and her dog perished in a fire on the 1900 block of Bristol Street on Monday afternoon, according to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden.
According to Madden, the Sweetwater Fire Department received the initial call about the fire just after 3:30 p.m. on Monday.
Nolan County United Way's 2013 Rattlesnake Round-up gun raffle will benefit the nine local agencies assisted by NCUW including Big Country Medical Reserve Corp, Boy Scouts, Cancer Services Network, Gateway Family Services, Girl Scouts,Â Senior Nutrition Activities Program (SNAP), Sweetwater Back Pack Buddies, West Texas Children's Advocacy Center and the Women's Resource Center.
Raffle prizes include three Savage Axis XP's ~ Camo- Rifle/Scope Packages with one 22-250, one 243 and one 270.
Texas National Bank will host the monthly Chamber of Commerce Coffee and belatedly celebrate Texas Independence Day at 10 a.m. on Wednesday in the bankâ€™s lobby at 400 East Broadway.
Guests will be invited to enter a drawing for a framed Texas flag print to be given away at the conclusion of the coffee.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 149 calls for service, issued 15 citations and made eight arrests from March 1-3, 2013.
The SPD received 83, 911 calls.

Cooler temperatures have come in to the area, as today's high will be near 55 with sunny skies. Winds will be from the north at 15 to 20 mph, gusting as high as 25 mph.
Tonight, expect mostly clear skies with a low around 33 and north-northwest winds at 5 to 15 mph. After midnight, winds will shift to the southeast.
