RPMH board cancels election

March 29, 2013

As a result of unopposed candidates, the Nolan County Hospital District (NCHD) will also be canceling their election on Saturday, May 11.
The cancellation was approved by the NCHD board during their meeting at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) on Monday night. The following directors were uncontested and will serve a new, two-year term: Linda Kite, District 2; Steve Holcomb, District 4; Jose Villafranca, District 6 and Kirby Andrews, District 7.

SISD maintenance team prepares for projects

The Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District) Maintenance Department has recently completed many projects and are already looking ahead to their summer plans.
The construction/maintenance update was given by Scott Lambert, the district’s maintenance director, during the March meeting of the SISD Board of Trustees.
As mentioned in last month’s meeting, the west side ticket booth at the Mustang Bowl will be remodeled this summer to look similar to the booth on the south end. Pillars will be placed from the end of the tennis courts to the bus barn.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 52 calls for service, issued no citations and made four arrests on Mar. 27, 2013.

The SPD received 36, 911 calls.

Your Good Friday forecast is bringing in a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms between 1 p.m. and 1 a.m. Otherwise, we'll see partly sunny skies with a high near 79 with southern winds at 15 to 20 mph. Gusts could be as high as 25 mph.
Tonight, expect mostly cloudy skies with a low around 58. Winds will be from the south at 10 to 20 mph.
On Saturday, we'll see highs in the 80s and lows in the upper 50s. Winds will shift throughout the day from the south to west-southwest and in the evening will come from the east with gusts as high as 20 mph.

Eighth Annual Family FunFair approaches

High Sky Children’s Ranch and the West Texas Children’s Advocacy Center have once again partnered to host the Eighth Annual West Texas Child Abuse Awareness Family FunFair in Sweetwater. The FunFair will be held at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex on Wednesday, April 10, from 4-6:30 p.m. The Time of Remembrance will start at 6 p.m. and organizers ask that everybody stay for the ceremony honoring children who have been victims of child abuse.

Ministerial Alliance to host Easter sunrise service

The Nolan County Ministerial Alliance will host an Easter Sunday sunrise service at 7 a.m. at the Mustang Bowl.
This event began as a dream of Jere Lawrence to provide an opportunity for the Christian community to gather to celebrate Christ’s resurrection. Everyone from Sweetwater and the surrounding area is invited to come worship this Sunday at the Mustang Bowl in Sweetwater.

Palacios honored by Crime Stoppers Board

Connie Palacios (right) was recently honored for her years of service on the Nolan County Crime Stoppers Board.
Palacios served as a Crime Stoppers board member for 12 years and has decided to resign her position.
She was presented with a plaque and a bouquet of roses by Co-Coordinator Angie Collier (left), from the Nolan County Crime Stoppers Board.

Man airlifted after motorcycle wreck

March 28, 2013

A man was airlifted from Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital on Wednesday afternoon after a wreck on Interstate 20 near mile marker 243 in Sweetwater.
According to emergency authorities, the man hit a light pole in the center median, bringing it down. The driver was not wearing a helmet.

Hospital board approves bed, mattress purchases

The Nolan County Hospital District board approved the purchase of two items during their meeting on Monday evening held at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH).
Rosa Best, the Chief Nursing Officer at RPMH, presented both of the items to the board.
One Stryker birthing bed will now be purchased and will replace the current product, which is used by laboring mothers. The purchase totals $17,092 and comes in under the budgeted price.

Discipline, SHAC reports heard at SISD board meeting

A couple reports were discussed by Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District) Assistant Superintendent Kathy Smartt during the March meeting of the SISD Board of Trustees.
The Data Validation Monitoring for Discipline Report was approved, in which the district took part in the report due to results in the recent PEIMS (Public Education Information Management System) report, which reflected action from two years ago.
