Water topics reported at city meeting

During his City Manager's report at the March meeting of the Sweetwater City Commission, Eddie Brown discussed the outcome of the city's dispute toward the application for a $7.5 million loan to the Bitter Creek Water Supply Corporation (BCWSC).
At their meeting held on February 28 in Austin, the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) approved the loan. Sweetwater was represented by some members of city staff at the meeting, but they were unable to make their case to the board.

Bibby bitten by rattlesnake

The 49th Annual Lone Star Expo Rattlesnake Roundup went on throughout the weekend without the star of the show: the Texas Snake Man. Jackie Bibby was loading rattlesnakes this past Friday afternoon at his home in Rising Star to bring them to Brownwood for the Expo when he was bitten in the stomach by one of the venomous rattlers. His father brought him to the Brownwood Regional Emergency Room in very serious condition. At last report, Bobby Dudley reported that Bibby was listed in critical condition where he was being treated in the Intensive Care Unit at BRMC.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 133 calls for service, issued two citations and made seven arrests from Mar. 15-17, 2013.

The SPD received 121, 911 calls.

• Theft — Sweetwater.
• Theft — 1100 block of E. Broadway.
• Criminal mischief — 500 block of Hill.
• Criminal mischief — 200 block of Lamar.

• Fraud — 200 block of Florida.

Arrested by SPD:
• Profidio Zambrano, 45 — Driving while intoxicated.

Body found in Scurry County, autopsy ordered

SNYDER, Texas (AP) — Investigators are trying to identify a badly decomposed body found in West Texas.
The Texas Department of Public Safety says law officers Sunday removed the remains from an undisclosed location in Scurry County near Snyder. Trooper Sparky Dean says further details on the site have not been made public as investigators seek to preserve the scene.
A person whose name hasn't been released reported finding the remains Saturday afternoon. Officials have not said the possible gender or age of the person. Dean says an autopsy has been ordered.

DI team advances to state tournament

The Destination Imagination team from Sweetwater Intermediate School — as winners at the Northwest Plains DI competition — will join approximately 300 Texas Destination Imagination regional winners at the affiliate tournament.

Public hearing held on abandonment, closure of right-of-way

A public hearing was held during the regular March meeting of the Sweetwater City Commission to consider the request for the abandonment and closure of a right-of-way.
The right-of-way is a twelve-and-a-half foot by 482.6 foot platted but undeveloped dead-end alley located between Bowie and Henderson Streets (west to east) and west Bradford Lane (north to south). Numerous portions of streets and alleys are already closed in this area.

Bids to be obtained, presented at city meeting

At the March meeting of the Sweetwater City Commission meeting, several bids were discussed on items that are necessary for city operations.
Bids were opened and considered on AC10 asphalt and grade 4 crushed rock, which will be used in the 2013 street seal coating projects. Three companies submitted bids, which were reviewed by city staff prior to any action being taken.

Nolan VFD to host pancake supper fundraiser

Seriously...who isn’t a fan of breakfast for supper? If you’re in the mood for the morning meal in the evening, you won’t have to wait too long.
On Saturday, March 23, the Nolan Volunteer Fire Department will be having a pancake supper fundraiser. The event will be held at the Nolan/Divide Community Center from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
There is no set cost for the meal, as donations will be accepted. All of the items used during the pancake supper will be donated by Dewayne Morgan, and 100% of the funds raised from the dinner will be used for the construction of a new fire station.
