County burn ban reinstated

April 23, 2013

Though short-lived, the burn ban for Nolan County was reinstated during the county commissioners meeting held on Monday at the Nolan County Courthouse.
Nolan County Judge Tim Fambrough had ordered the lifting of the ban on Friday, April 12, although its reinstatement was listed on Monday's agenda. However, in a statement released after the meeting on Monday afternoon, the emergency burn ban and fireworks ban will remain in effect for 90 days unless significant rainfall is received.

SMS Robotics teams receive award

On Saturday, the Sweetwater Middle School Robotics Program took five teams to compete in the GEAR Robotics Competition at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. The competition officially began on March 23, when the theme of the competition was revealed. This year's theme was Dr. Roboto. It focused on how robots are used in the medical field.
To compete, each team designed a robot, programmed it to complete simulated medical missions and write an engineering essay explaining how they approached the challenge. Each team also came up with a team name and t-shirt design for the competition.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 173 calls for service, issued 30 citations and made 10 arrests from April 19-21, 2013.

The SPD received 106, 911 calls.

We have a very different weather outlook today, with mostly cloudy skies and a high near 45. It'll be breezy with winds from the north at 15 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph. A 20% chance of showers is also forecasted.
Tonight, the rain chances will continue until 1 a.m.; otherwise, we'll see mostly cloudy skies with a low around 34. Winds will remain from the north at 10 to 15 mph, and gusts could top out at 20 mph.

SHS FFA teams qualify for State

The Sweetwater FFA experienced success at the Area FFA Judging Contests, qualifying seven out of eight teams for State. In the coming weeks, these seven teams, along with three additional teams — who don't have an Area qualifying event, but go straight to State — will go to their respective State contests.

Many help with Camp Boothe Oaks clean-up

Many local Girl Scouts and their families turned out for the Camp Boothe Oaks clean-up on Saturday, taking on several different projects at the local Girl Scout camp.

TSTC offering disaster relief for West, Texas

Texas State Technical College West Texas is now collecting donations for those affected by the disaster in West, Texas. The donations will be delivered to the area on Friday, April 26. The public is encouraged to drop-off any donations at your local TSTC campus. Items needed include water, Gatorade, non-perishable food items, toiletries, baby wipes, baby items, blankets, towels, wash rags and clothing and shoes for men, women and children, etc.

If you or a loved one has disrupted breathing or snoring at night, sleep apnea could be the cause. Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) will be hosting a free Lunch and Learn Seminar on April 25, to educate attendees more about sleep apnea and treatment options for this serious condition.
