NCBR awards four college scholarships

The Nolan County Board of Realtors was very excited at the number of applicants who applied for their $500 college scholarship. This scholarship was made available to all of the graduating high school seniors in Nolan County, planning to further their education. "The NCBR Scholarship Committee was also very impressed with the number of applicants that were qualified to receive this award. It was a very difficult job for the selection committee."

Federal healthcare overhaul to affect SISD

During Thursday's meeting of the SISD (Sweetwater Independent School District) Board of Trustees, discussion was held on the Affordable Care Act (ACA)--the changes made by the federal government on health insurance--and how it will affect the school district.
According to SISD Superintendent Terry Pittman, substitute teachers who work over 30 hours a week would have to be offered health care by the district. The ACA specifies that an employee who works 30 hours a week is at full-time work status.

Chamber hosts ribbon cutting for RPMH remodeled gift shop

Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital staff and administration, gift shop Purple People Greeters, and Sweetwater community members gathered at the newly remodeled RPMH gift shop for a ribbon cutting hosted by the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce and Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors on Tuesday morning.
Purple People Greeters, volunteers who run the gift shop among many other duties, are Barbara Williams, Peggy Otwell, Pearl Atkins, Edna Sowell, Billie Diddle, Rose Ann Elston, Phyllis Morris and Johnnie Gainey.

Commissioners approve several appointments, burn ban remains lifted

Several appointments were approved during Monday morning's meeting of the Nolan County Commissioners.
The appointment of Rut Crawley as manager for the Nolan County Welfare Office was approved, while Carol Flint was given approval to serve on the Nolan County Welfare Board. For the Sick Pool Committee, approval was given for Kathy Bowen to serve.
Also during the meeting, in a three-to-one vote, the burn ban for Nolan County was approved to remain lifted for the next two weeks.
