Lighthouse Assembly of God Church, located at 412 Newman, will be having a Vacation Bible School from Monday, July 15 through Friday, July 19 from 6-8 p.m. for children aged 4-11. Everyone is invited. For more information, contact James Smith at 325-733-4071.
The second annual Teen Book Club will meet at the County-City Library Monday at 1:30 p.m. The book selected is "Speak" by Laurie Halse Anderson. Those attending will enjoy snacks and play fun games. The Teen Book Club will end July 22 with a pizza/movie party. The Teen Book Club will watch the movie "Speak". Call 235-4978 for more information.
First United Methodist Church will host a music camp July 15-26 from 9 a.m. to noon each Monday, Wednesday and Friday for children ages three years old to seventh grade. The staff at Hoyt House hosted a cook-out and potluck for their residents and their families to celebrate the Fourth of July and to show their patriotic appreciation for the freedom in the United States of America. Burgers and hot dogs were cooked by staff members Blanche Gentry and Heather Atkins. The house was patriotically decorated with an assortment of red, white and blue flags and other dĂ©cor throughout the common areas. The staff served a variety of tasty dishes and desserts prepared by residents' family members.
One person entered a plea during 32nd Judicial District Court this past week.
Erica Ordaz pleaded guilty to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a second degree felony.
Court documents state that Ordaz threatened the victim with imminent bodily injury by cutting the victim with a knife on May 24, 2012.
For her plea, Ordaz received six years of community supervision. She will also have to pay a $1,000 fine, $343 in court costs, $500 in attorney's fees and $640 in restitution to the victim. She will also have to serve 240 hours of community service.
The Sweetwater Kiwanis Club and Sweetwater Lake & Marina are coming together to host a Kids Fishing Tournament on Saturday, July 20 at the Lake Sweetwater Boat Ramp.
The event will run from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., with lunch and prizes to follow.
There will be a $5 entry fee per participant, which will cover the costs for lunch, gifts and prizes. Prizes will be awarded for the Biggest Fish, Smallest Fish and Outstanding Angler to the following age groups: 3 to 5 year olds, 6 to 8 year olds, 9 to 12 year olds and 13 to 16 year olds.
Alyssa Harwell was recently named the 2012-2013 Teacher of the Year at J.P. Cowen Early Childhood Center. She has been a teacher for the past two years, with last year being her first year to teach Head Start at Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District).
Harwell earned her degree in Early Childhood Education from McMurry University. Additionally, she is a member of the TCTA (Texas Classroom Teachers Association).
