Eyeglasses being collected at RPMH

September 17, 2013

The local Lions Club and Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital are currently having a drive and collecting old and unused eyeglasses for the Lions Club International Recycle For Sight program.
Those wishing to donate may bring the eye glasses to the admissions desk at RPMH this week. Glasses will also be collected at the Wednesday lunch and learn program that will feature eye health.

The Pioneer Museum in Sweetwater is searching for any information on this photo. The photo is of ninth graders in 1959.
Anyone with information on who the people in the photo are or leads to other information or to people who may have more information may call Melonnie Hicks or Betty Turner at the museum at 325-235-8547.
The hours of the museum are Tuesday through Saturday from 1-4 p.m. Any and all information is appreciated.

Traffic to be reduced to one lane on I-20, US 84 overpass

Traffic will be reduced to one lane on westbound Interstate 20 at the US 84 overpass in Nolan County today to allow construction crews to continue removing scaffolding as the project nears completion. The passing (left) lane will be closed until early afternoon. Once the passing lane is open, the driving (right) lane will be closed to finish removing the equipment. Both lanes are expected to be open by mid-day on Tuesday.

Local artist paints mural at Southeast Elementary

In an effort to brighten up the school, Southeast Elementary School PTO President Jana Hall approached local artist Cindy Brooks with a novel idea — a storybook mural in the main hallway of the school. Brooks was approached in January of this year to paint a whimsical mural for the students, staff and visitors of Southeast Elementary to enjoy. The theme the PTO members came up with is "Where Your Story Begins." The three week project, funded by last year's PTO fundraisers, was finished just in time for Meet the Teacher last month and has been a talking point ever since.

Eye health topic of free lunch and learn seminar at RPMH

Sight is one of the most precious senses one can possess, but many health factors can greatly reduce your vision. Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) will be focusing on eye health and wellness as the topic of this month’s Lunch and Learn Seminar on Wednesday, Sept. 18.
Led by Cody Wilkinson, doctor of optometry and optometric glaucoma specialist, the seminar will cover the basics of eye health and how prominent diseases and health conditions can reduce or eliminate a person’s sight.

Class reunions planned Homecoming weekend

Many classes of Sweetwater High School have planned reunions for Homecoming weekend in Sweetwater, Sept. 20-22.
The Class of 1968 is celebrating their 45th reunion and hosting the All Class Reunion during Homecoming on Sept. 20.
The event will kick off at 2 p.m. with the Exes Tea at Sweetwater High School and ends with a reception which runs from 6 p.m. to midnight at the Texas Theatre, hosted by Randy and Jolanda Hendricks.
Admission to the reception is free and is BYOB.

Police station bids open at city meeting

Bids were opened for the construction of the new police station during Tuesday's Sweetwater City Commission meeting.
While seven bids were received, one bid was disqualified due to the fact that the company had no representation at a mandatory pre-bid meeting.
The remaining six bids were then briefly discussed, with the base bid cost noted and how long the work would take. Also mentioned were the costs of alternates, additions, deduction costs and costs of concrete.

Leadership Sweetwater kicks off for the year

The Leadership Sweetwater class of 2013-2014 gathered for their first day this week at the Texas State Technical College Center.
