Many area schools have cancelled classes for Friday as roads began to ice over on Thursday, causing many wrecks in Nolan County and the surrounding areas.
School closings include Highland ISD, Blackwell CISD, Roscoe ISD and Sweetwater ISD. Roby CISD and Rotan ISD will begin classes at 10 a.m. but no buses will run.
Sweetwater Goodfellows distribution has been postponed until Monday, Dec. 9, due to the bad weather.
Recipients need to come at there scheduled times Monday between 9-11 a.m. at The Lamar Street Baptist Church Gymnasium.
The Christmas party will be that afternoon at 3:45 p.m.
It's been known as "a day which will live in infamy," and the attack on the U.S Naval base on Pearl Harbor, located on the Hawaiian island of Oahu, on Dec. 7, marks an anniversary that most Americans will remember for years to come.
Today, there will be a 30% chance of freezing rain and sleet before noon. Expect cloudy and cold conditions, with a high near 24 and northern winds around 15 mph. Wind chill values will be between 3 and 12. Total daytime sleet accumulation of less than a half inch are possible.
Tonight will be cloudy, with a low around 13 and wind chill values between -1 and 7. Winds will be from the north-northeast at 10 to 15 mph.

An area family is doing their part to help a relative recover from a serious wreck.
The family of Michael McFaul will be holding three events on Saturday, December 14 in Roscoe. All proceeds from the events will be given to his benefit account, which was established in order to provide financial support for McFaul's rising medical expenses as well as the growing cost of airfare to send family to be by his side for emotional and physical support.
McFaul is currently in the Grady Hospital Burn Unit in Atlanta, GA. His family resides in Texas, which is over 1,100 miles away.
Zeravla Entertainment presents "Christmas with Thoze Guyz and Friends", which will be held on Saturday, December 7 at Rattlers Pool Hall.
Doors will open at 7 p.m. Admission to the event can either be a $5 toy, or $5 worth of canned goods (with receipt), or $10 cash, with all proceeds benefitting the children of Sweetwater.

Abilene â€” 169 students will graduate from Texas State Technical College West Texas on Thursday, Dec. 5, at 7 p.m. at the Abilene Civic Center. Among the graduates is the first class of Downhole Tool Technicians, 16 in all. Dustin K. Baker is graduating from the Downhole Tool program and he will represent the Sweetwater Campus as the graduation speaker during Thursdayâ€™s ceremony. Baker and his fellow classmates are being snapped up by local oil and gas companies. The one-semester program began in August and was developed with input from oil and gas industry representatives and safety experts.
Texas Department of Transportation maintenance offices throughout the Abilene and Brownwood Districts are preparing for another winter storm expected to move into the area that could linger into the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures are expected to drop rapidly, and some areas could see frozen precipitation. Sustained cold temperatures and several waves of precipitation are possible for several days. Travel could be extremely hazardous under these conditions.
