Hundreds remember Hailey Dunn

Hailey Darlene Dunn was a cheerleader, saxophonist, on the softball and basketball teams, a doer and a leader. But it all ended mysteriously in December 2010 when the 13-year-old West Texas girl disappeared.
Through prayers, songs, pictures and shared memories, Hailey's friends, family and schoolteachers gathered Sunday at Colorado Middle School — where she was a student — to remember a young girl whose remains were found in March.
"Hailey was a doer. She set an example for others to follow. She will always be one of us in spirit," Mark Merrell, the middle school principal said.

Sweetwater remains in Stage I drought plan

Following an evaluation from the city engineers, Sweetwater will remain in Stage I of the city's Drought Contingency Plan.
As stated during City Manager Eddie Brown's report during the May meeting of the City Commission, Enprotec/Hibbs & Todd made the determination from its recent water availability assessment. Stage I involves limiting the use of water on a voluntary basis.

Sweetwater loses to Andrews

The Sweetwater Mustang baseball team lost 7 to 6 to Andrews in eight innings. Andrews won best of three in the Regional Quarterfinals 2 to 0 and advances to the Regional Semifinals.

The 32nd Judicial District Attorney’s Office hosted a reception in honor of law enforcement officers who have served and protected local communities and the state of Texas as part of National Police Week. During the reception, a documentary was presented, but not before a surprise presentation was made.

Authorization given to obtain bids for new police station

The Sweetwater City Commission gave authorization for city staff to go out on bids for the construction of a new police station during their meeting on Tuesday morning.
The architect is very close to finishing the plans; upon their completion, this approval grants permission for the city to begin obtaining bids.
Other bids were discussed during the meeting as well. Approval was given to allow staff to go out for bids to sell five surplus, real properties owned by the city.

Various ordinances presented at city meeting

The Sweetwater City Commission once again took a look at the city ordinance on storage containers during their meeting on Tuesday at City Hall.
Chapter 18 of the Code of Ordinances, entitled "Miscellaneous Provisions and Offenses," dealt with allowing freight and portable storage containers in certain zoning districts. The ordinance was previously passed, but after a request by the commissioners, it was reconsidered by the city to make it more business friendly.

A friendly and familiar face has rejoined the Sweetwater Reporter advertising team. Brenda Morales, Sweetwater native, reprised her advertising executive role in March of 2013. She first brought her advertising expertise to the Sweetwater Reporter from 2002-2003 and then again from 2008-2010.
Morales was born and raised in Sweetwater. She graduated from Sweetwater High School in 2001 and then again from Texas State Technical College in 2007 with a degree in digital imaging and design.

Honk rally sends off Mustangs

The Sweetwater Mustang baseball team was sent off to Lubbock for the Region I-3A quarterfinal best-of-3 series at Lubbock Christian University’s Hays Field on Friday with several schools having a honk rally. The Mustangs lost their first game last night by one run and will play again today at 2 p.m. Check back for scores.
