April 29th
BreAnne Richardson, FCCLA member at Blackwell High School, was recently named the Best of Texas Outstanding Special Achievement Student by the Texas Career and Technology Council (TCTC). This state-wide award is in recognition of the student’s achievements, academics, service and participation during high school.
On Saturday, May 11, registered voters in Roscoe have the opportunity to head to the polls to cast their vote in a bond election approved by the Roscoe Collegiate Independent School District (RCISD) Board of Trustees for the construction of a $3.5 million Capstone Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Research Center.
Regular voting will take place on Saturday, May 11 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the RCISD Cafetorium, located at 1201 West 7th Street in Roscoe.
The Sweetwater High School softball team won its first bi-district championship ever by beating Pecos, 11-1, on Saturday in five innings. The Lady Mustangs will now advance to take on Pampa in the area playoffs this week.
The players on this year's team are Abby Garcia, Lena Lovelady, Shaneese Brown, Cierra Knox, Jerren Villa, Suede Shirley, Kendra Crosson, Keyli Turner, Maty Montgomery, Kelsi Crosson, Alyssa Heredia, Morgan Gomez, Megan Holsey and Jaya Atkins.

April is National Financial Literacy Month, and the Independent Bankers Association of Texas (IBAT) encourages parents to use this opportunity to teach their children the importance of financial literacy. IBAT recently announced the three recipients of its Teaching Excellence in Financial Literacy Award—Skylar Houston from Sweetwater High School, Lynn Scotty from Utopia High School and Linda Comer from Wellington High School.
As the clock winds down to graduation, Sweetwater High School (SHS) seniors were honored during Thursday night's AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Dinner Celebration held at the SHS cafeteria.
AVID is a national college-readiness program that is designed to increase the number of students who not only enroll but persevere in a four-year college or university.
Today will be sunny with a high near 91. Winds will be from the south-southwest around 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.
Tonight, expect partly cloudy skies with a low around 65 and south-southeastern winds at 15 to 20 mph. Gusts could be as high as 25 mph.

April 27th
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 62 calls for service, issued no citations and made two arrests on April 25, 2013.
The SPD received 31, 911 calls.
Calls for service:
• Minor in possession — 1200 block of Ragland.
• Found property — 900 block of Circle Drive.
• Unauthorized use of a motor vehicle — 600 block of E. Third.
Arrested by SPD:
• Maria Delatorre, 29 — Warrants.
• Male juvenile, 14 — Minor in consumption/public intoxication/curfew violation.
The Nolan County Sheriff's Office, in conjunction with the Texas State Fire Marshal's Office, is investigating a vacant house fire that occurred on Tuesday, April 24, at approximately 7 a.m.
The vacant house, located at 1818 FM 608, just north of Roscoe, was a complete loss as a result of the fire. The investigation into the cause of this house fire is currently listed as undetermined by both agencies.
Other structure fires in or around the Roscoe community have not been linked in any way to this vacant house fire.
Sleep apnea was the topic of discussion at the Lunch and Learn Seminar held this past Thursday at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH).
The program was co-hosted by local physician Dr. Robert Eaker and Dr. Ted Dyer, the director of the Hendrick Sleep Study Clinic of Abilene. Dr. Dyer led the presentation, while both doctors fielded questions after the program.
One-third of a person's life will be spent sleeping, although sleep is not a "passive" period. While consciousness is reduced during this time, the brain is still active.
April 26th
On March 16, 2013, local authorities were notified of human remains located near Lake J.B. Thomas in southwest Scurry County. The remains were sent to the University of North Texas Center for Human Identification for DNA analysis. On April 26, 2013, the Scurry County District Attorney's office received written confirmation that the remains have been positively identified as those of Hailey Dunn.
