TNB sponsors financial literacy essay contest

National Financial Literacy Month is recognized in the United States in April in an effort to highlight the importance of financial literacy and teach Americans how to establish and maintain healthy financial habits. Texas National Bank recognizes the importance of financial literacy in the community and seeks to actively create a more secure financial future for the citizens of Nolan County.

Pioneer Museum to present lecture from A&M anthropology professor

The Pioneer City-County Museum will present a lecture by Dr. Shelley Wachsmann, Professor of Anthropology at Texas A&M University.
In 1986, Dr. Wachsmann, working as nautical archaeologist for Israel, was called to the kibbutz Ginosar and the Sea of Galilee to take a look at a "possibly ancient" boat. The first ancient ship to be recovered from the Sea of Galilee, the boat is the type described in the Gospel as used by Jesus' disciples.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 43 calls for service, issued four citations and made one arrest on April 4, 2013.

The SPD received 22, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Harassment — 700 block of E. New Mexico.
• Theft — 1800 block of Lamar.
• Bigamy — Sweetwater area.

Arrested by SPD:
• Sylvia Morales, 30 — Warrants.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had eight calls for service, served three civil papers and made two arrests on April 4, 2013.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Randall Wayne Bradberry, 50, of Sweetwater — Warrant/parole violation.

Monday is Taste of Sweetwater

The Taste of Sweetwater is an annual event people of Sweetwater and the surrounding areas have come to enjoy. It is a chance for residents to sample foods from many local restaurants and other food establishments under one roof. This year, the event will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 8, at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex. The cost is $10 for adults, $6 for seniors and $4 for children ages 3-12.

Local Girl Scout to throw first pitch at Texas Rangers game

Brownie Girl Scout Luz Cano will have the opportunity of a lifetime when she throws out the first pitch at the Texas Rangers vs. Los Angeles Angels game on Sunday, April 7. The lucky second grader from Blackwell was chosen out of thousands of girls from across the Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains council.
“Luz will turn eight on April 12, so this is a wonderful early birthday present,” said Norma Cano, Luz’s mom and troop co-leader. “We are big baseball fans and this will be our first time attending a professional baseball game.”

Demolition begins at McDonald’s

Demolition of the McDonald’s restaurant in Sweetwater began this week with the large playland toy coming down.
The new McDonald's is planning to have a new indoor toddler play area and games for children. The restaurant closed on March 31 and plans are to re-open in July or early August.

TSTC West Texas, industry partners create specialty oil and gas certificate

TSTC West Texas will be offering a new specialty certificate this fall, Downhole Tool Technician, pending approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Downhole Tool Technicians are in-demand locally due to the recent Cline Shale activity, as well as across Texas as shale operations continues to increase. According to a recent article in Forbes magazine, Texas today produces roughly 30% of the US natural gas and roughly 30% of US oil production. With the Cline Shale booming in West Texas, industry has expressed the need for qualified, trained technicians.

Camp Courage offers healing and hope for children suffering loss

Dealing with loss can be difficult for anyone, but children can find it especially challenging. Hendrick Hospice Care’s Camp Courage offers a place of healing and hope for area children suffering a loss of a loved one through death, divorce or other painful transition. Registration is now open for the camp scheduled for Saturday, June 1 through Tuesday, June 4. The camp is offered for third through 12th graders and is held in Lueders.
