Flu vaccine administered daily at health department

Alice Velez from the Diabetic Outreach Program at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital will be at the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department on Thursday from 8:30 a.m. until noon to check blood glucose and answer any questions one may have regarding diabetes. Pamphlets and materials will be available.

Grilling for 15 years

Today it has been 15 years since Irene Martinez took ownership of Dairyland in Sweetwater.
She took over the restaurant on Jan. 13, 1998, after working there for about six months. "I was the main cook at the time and I bought the restaurant from L.H. Howard. The person who was running the place did not want it any more and Mr. Howard let me take over payments for the restaurant and I've been here ever since."

SPD investigates home invasions

The Sweetwater Police Department on Monday evening responded to the 800 block of Circle Drive regarding a complaint of a home invasion.
According to Sweetwater Chief of Police Brian Frieda, the victim stated that multiple suspects entered the residence demanding money. The suspects left with an undisclosed amount of money, along with multiple cell phones.
The victim was unable to provide physical descriptions of the suspects.
The investigation in this case in ongoing.

PTC extension benefits local wind industries

The "fiscal cliff" and its last-minute agreement obviously affect the national landscape, but it also played a large role on the local front, as the Production Tax Credit (PTC)--which deals with the wind energy industry--was extended in the package.
According to AWEA (American Wind Energy Association), the extension of the PTC will cover all wind projects that will begin construction this year, along with projects beyond 2013 to qualify for the credit.
To develop a wind farm, it takes around 18 to 24 months. Also included was bonus depreciation, all of which will assist the industry.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 44 calls for service, issued no citations and made three arrests on Jan. 10, 2013.

The SPD received 27, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 100 block of S. Hopkins Road.
• Arizona and I-20.
• 1300 block of W. 8th.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 700 block of Pease.
• Duty on striking an unattended vehicle — 1600 block of Grand.
• Cruelty to animals — 100 block of Tonkawa.
• Family violence assault — 900 block of Lamar.
• Theft — 1100 block of E. Broadway.
• Information report — 1600 block of San Carlos.

Familiar face joins the team

A familiar face has once again joined the team at the Sweetwater Reporter. Zela Armstrong, who was on the sales team nine years ago, has re-joined the advertising team for the local newspaper. She was hired as an advertising executive by new Publisher Glenn Stifflemire.
Armstrong has lived in Sweetwater since she was in the eighth grade and she and her husband of 27 years, Gary Armstrong, have one daughter, Staci Armstrong of Abilene, who is a Sweetwater High School and Hardin Simmons University graduate.

The Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital Diabetes Outreach Program will sponsor free blood sugar checks from 8:30 a.m. to noon on Thursday at the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department, located at 301 E. 12th Street.
Type 1 diabetes symptoms are frequent urination, unusual thirst, extreme hunger, unusual weight loss, extreme fatigue and irritability.

Mi Familias reopens after four years

After almost four years of being closed, Mi Familias Mexican restaurant, located on the corner of Alabama and Sam Houston Streets, has reopened its doors to the community.
Owner Adam Gomez says that on his grand opening day on Tuesday, it was like he had never closed. "My former customers were very happy to see me. It reminded me of how much I enjoyed doing this and how much I missed my customers."
Gomez said that on his last day of business almost four years ago, that the restaurant sold out of everything. "We couldn't even make you a bean burrito the last 15 minutes that we were open."

Circus in town tonight

The Magicland Circus will be in Sweetwater this evening with one show at 4:30 p.m. and another show at 7 p.m. at the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium.
The circus will bring magic, illusions, juggling, balancing, clowns and special characters such as Spongebob Squarepants and Buzz Lightyear among others to the Sweetwater audience. Advance tickets can be purchased from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today by calling 956-229-9177.
