Chamber donates to WTRA

Jacque McCoy (left) and Jeff Howard (right) with the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Bureau present a check for $17,500 to Walt Harris, president of the West Texas Rodeo Association. McCoy thanked those that were present for their support in contributing to the local economy while they were in Sweetwater.

Sweetwater tornado 27 years later

Many in Sweetwater remember this day 27 years ago, as a tornado took residents by surprise that April morning. The tornado that occurred about 7:15 a.m. affected about one-sixth of the city's population according to figures gathered by city and civil defense officials at that time. No warning was given by sirens.

Man indicted for intoxicated manslaughter

A Nolan County Grand Jury indicted 12 people this past week. Four of those indictments were sealed. The following cases were true-billed:
Gustavo Lopez Cervantes, 36, from Wichita Falls, was indicted for intoxicated manslaughter, a second degree felony. Court documents state that Cervantes operated a motor vehicle while intoxicated on Nov. 23, 2012.
Cervantes was driving a 2002 Dodge Ram eastbound in the westbound passing lane of IH-20. He was wearing a seat belt.

Cline Shale counties hope to learn from Eagleford Shale

As Nolan, Fisher and the surrounding counties — who are part of the Cline Shale — continue to prepare for and take part in the development, their hope is to learn from another major oil play in Texas: the Eagleford Shale.
During the quarterly luncheon of the Cline Shale Alliance, recently held at the Sweetwater TSTC (Texas State Technical College) campus, a presentation was given by Dwain Rogers from the Sustainable Energy Research Institute at the University of Texas-San Antonio.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 60 calls for service, issued one citation and made no arrests on April 17, 2013.

The SPD received 38, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 1500 block of Elm.

Calls for service:
• Criminal mischief — 1100 block of Crane.
• Burglary of a building — 800 block of E. 17th.
• Possession of drug paraphernalia — 900 block of Mulberry.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had three calls for service, served one civil paper and made one arrest on April 17, 2013.

Several jailed after guilty pleas

Several people were jailed and some were put on community supervision after entering pleas to Judge Glen Harrison during 32nd Judicial District Court proceedings this week.

Local representatives attend TSTC Day in Austin

Sweetwater was well represented at the capital in Austin on Wednesday. Texas State Technical College was holding its "day" at the capital to promote TSTC and technical training. TSTC is also promoting a "Downhole Tool Technician" program for the oil and gas industry. The Downhole Tool Technician program length is only 15 weeks. Proposed pipeline, power plant discussed

Presentations on two upcoming projects in the area were discussed during the Cline Shale Alliance's quarterly luncheon, held recently at TSTC (Texas State Technical College) in Sweetwater.
Sweetwater Mayor Greg Wortham examined the BridgeTex Pipeline and oil storage terminal, which is coming about through the joint efforts of Magellan Midstream Partners and Occidental Petroleum (OXY) in 2014. The latter company will lead oil expertise services, while Magellan will assist in the construction.

Roscoe students inducted into honor society

Several Roscoe Collegiate High School students were recently inducted into the Psi Zeta Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society of Western Texas College. Newly inducted members from Roscoe Collegiate include Eva Aguayo, Brant Burnett, Amber Craig, Rene Diaz, Shelby Higgins, Kendall Moses, Jose Rangel, Luke Rovig, Shelton Toliver and Whitney Williams.
