County, hospital vote on tax abatement for Buzzi Unicem

A proposal for a modernization project for the Buzzi Unicem plant in Maryneal was presented to two groups on Monday--the Nolan County Commissioners and the board of directors of the Nolan County Hospital District (NCHD).
The presentation offered a recap of the previous project in Maryneal, an update on the industry as a whole, a group overview of Buzzi Unicem USA, the current status of the plant, and the proposed project.

Groundbreaking ceremony takes place for RPMH Cardiac Rehab

A groundbreaking ceremony took place Tuesday morning at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital for their new Cardiac Rehabilitation Center.
Hospital Board members Kirby Andrews, Steve Holcomb, Jose Villafranca, Vickie May and Cheyenne Smith, along with Donna Boatright, Hospital Administrator, and Wes Stafford, Director of Cardiac Rehab, threw the first shovelful of dirt with golden shovels to mark the occasion.
Hospital Department Managers, Chamber of Commerce members and community members attended the ceremony as well.

Two SISD campuses honored by school board

Two Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District) campuses were recognized at the recent school board meeting for obtaining an Academic Achievement Award.
East Ridge Elementary was honored in Reading/ELA (English-Language Arts), while Sweetwater Middle School earned the award for Mathematics.
Pictured, representing East Ridge at the meeting were principal Vicki Mayberry, along with teachers Andrea Barkley, Lisa Sorrells and Tammy Mulanax.

County burn ban lifted

Following the significant amount of rain received in the area, the Nolan County Commissioners gave approval to lift the county-wide burn ban during their meeting held on Monday morning.
Also during the meeting, a contract between Elliott Air Conditioning and the county was approved, in which no changes were cited. Approval was also given for the county to continue its participation in the TAC (Texas Association of Counties) County Choice Retiree medical program.

Eye health the topic at RPMH monthly lunch and learn seminar

Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) focused on eye health and wellness as the topic of this month’s Lunch and Learn Seminar, held on Wednesday.
Cody Wilkinson, doctor of optometry and optometric glaucoma specialist, led the seminar, covering the basics of eye health and how prominent diseases and health conditions can reduce or eliminate a person’s sight.
