First Baptist Church Sweetwater welcomes Buckner International’s President and CEO, Albert Reyes, as their guest speaker at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 22 in the church sanctuary located at 213 East Third Street.

Two transported in wreck, wet road to blame

Two people were transported to Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital on Thursday between 11 a.m. and noon after a wreck occurred along the US 84 Interstate 20 split, just east of the bridge in the west bound lanes.
One patient was in stable condition and the other was in guarded condition at the time of their transport by Sweetwater emergency services. The driver of a Chevrolet truck pulling a van lost control on the rain slicked road and struck the guardrail.

Train car catches fire

The Sweetwater Fire Department received a call on Thursday afternoon from a person driving a train.
The caller stated that smoke was coming out of the back car, the engine and that flames were shooting out the side of the train car. The train had stopped to change crews when the engine had shut off and the car that was on fire stopped over the Musgrove overpass.
Firefighters worked with engineers and company members to extinguish the blaze. Hydraulic oil caught the west bound train on fire.

Homecoming weekend weather forecast

Expect showers and possibly a thunderstorm to kick off Homecoming weekend, with a high near 75 and north-northeast winds at 10 to 15 mph.
Those rain chances continue throughout the evening, with a low around 61. Winds will be from the north-northeast at 5 to 15 mph.
This weekend, our only other rain chances will be before 8 a.m. on Saturday. Otherwise, expect weekend highs in the high 70s/low 80s and nighttime lows in the upper 50s/low 60s.

Warren named plant manager at Sweetwater wind farms

Infigen Energy (Infigen) announced that Greg Warren is the new plant manager for Sweetwater 1,2 and 3 wind farms in Texas. Warren is responsible for overseeing the safe and reliable operations of the facilities.
Warren comes to Infigen with more than seven years of procedures-driven operations experience in the wind business. He previously served as plant manager for GE, Invenergy and BP Wind. Warren also served 12 years as an Instrument and Electrical Manager at a large chemical plant in Houston.  

Homecoming ticket sales continue today

Ticket pre-sales for Friday's game against Wall will be on sale beginning Wednesday, Sept. 18 through Friday, Sept. 20.
The prices will be $5 for adults and $3 for students in advance. All tickets will be $6 at the gate.
The ball game will be played in Sweetwater with kick-off at 7:30 p.m. For more information please call 235-8601 ext. 116.

Growth continues in Roscoe

A ribbon cutting was held at the Plowboy Center Lodge, run by Max and Tom Watt, in Roscoe this week. Located at 1000 Broadway, the small four unit lodge offers cosy nightly, weekly or monthly accommodations for travelers and locals.
"We've dedicated the whole property in honor of Raymond and Ina Althof, lifetime Plowboy fans," said Max.
Max and Tom, who were born and raised in Roscoe, decided to move from Clovis, NM upon retirement. The Plowboy Center Lodge officially opened in January of 2013. Call 575-799-0812 or stop by their location in Roscoe.

SISD to host junior high UIL meet

The Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District) Board of Trustees met for their meeting on Monday night, in which approval was given for an early release day on Wednesday, December 4.
The purpose of the shortened class day is due to the fact that the district will be hosting the junior high UIL (University Interscholastic League) academic meet, as they did last year. This year, Big Spring will be hosting the high school and elementary meets, while Snyder will host the one-act play competition.

Royce Porter to return for Homecoming

Royce Porter will return to Sweetwater this weekend during Homecoming. Porter will attend several events involving the Sweetwater/Newman High School All Class Reunion including an event after the football game on Friday at the Texas Theatre, hosted by Randy and Jolanda Hendricks. He is also expected to attend the 3 p.m. to midnight event at the WASP Museum and is looking for any of his students he taught and invites them to attend with guitar in hand. Porter is also expected to be the Homecoming parade marshal and will be given a key to the city this weekend.
