County burn ban reinstated

September 11, 2013

The burn ban for Nolan County was reinstated at the county commissioners' meeting held on Monday morning.
Precinct 4 Commissioner Tony Lara made the motion, which was seconded by Terry Willman, Precinct 1 Commissioner and then approved by all four commissioners. The burn ban will be considered again by the commissioners at their next regular meeting.
Also during the meeting, a public hearing was held on the 2013-2014 proposed budget. No input was heard, and no changes were noted for the proposed budget.

Marian Ann Montgomery visits WASP Museum

Marian Ann Montgomery and her husband, Barry, of Dallas, toured the WASP Museum Friday evening and visited with museum and community representatives. Marian Ann is a museum and textile consultant and has experience in museum administration, archival and curatorial projects and program development.

County honors Wes Bishop

September 10, 2013

A resolution was read and approved at Monday's county commissioners meeting honoring Wes Bishop from Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) Physical Therapy Department.
Nolan County Judge Tim Fambrough read the resolution, which cited Bishop's distinguished service as a leader of the community. In 1977, Bishop helped establish the first physical therapy department at the hospital, in which his efforts improved the quality of life for many individuals.

TSTC West Texas featured on A&E’s hit show Storage Wars Texas

The hit show Storage Wars Texas filmed a segment for the current season at Texas State Technical College West Texas. The show’s contestants found a small wind turbine in a storage locker, so the show traveled to Sweetwater to meet up with local wind expert, Keith Plantier, Director of Energy Systems at TSTC West Texas. Keith powered up the turbine to ensure it was in working order then valued it for contestants Ricky and Bubba.

SRPC awards scholarship to TSTC student

Carroll Kearney, President of the Sweetwater Rifle and Pistol Club (SRPC), presented Bearett Eckhardt, a student at Texas State Technical College, with a $1,000 scholarship Friday morning.
The SRPC has been giving Nolan County high school seniors scholarships for the past five years and to TSTC students for the past three years. Bearett was chosen based on his grades, need, application and resumé, and plans for the future.

SNCHD announces free cholesterol screening and flu shot clinics

September is National Cholesterol Education Month and to acknowledge this occasion Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital Lab will be at the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department (SNCHD), located at 301 E. 12th, on Thursday, Sept. 19, from 8:30-11:30 a.m. to offer free cholesterol screening. The health department would like to say thank you to the hospital for their years of service providing free services to the public at the facility.

Cub Scout registration tonight

Cub Scout registration will be held tonight, Sept. 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the 4th & Elm Church of Christ youth center (in the back).
A free Cub Scout handbook will be given with registration. Registration fee is $6.25, and forms and fees will be collected this night.
