Verbal Judo! This month the Big Country Medical Reserve Corps will offer training conducted by Scott Davis, USAF Retired. Verbal Judo is a way of using words as a way to maintain mental and emotional safety. This kind of âconflict managementâ involves using posture and body language, tone of voice and choice of words as a means for calming a potentially volatile situation before it can manifest into physical violence.
Highland Heights United Methodist Church recently consecrated a collection of school supplies for needy students in the second and third grades at the Sweetwater East Ridge Elementary campus. The school outreach ministry is one of several ministries that the church sponsors throughout the year.
Wal-Mart is supporting Sweetwater Independent School District in a unique way this weekend.
Friday through Sunday, they have asked for a Sweetwater ISD bus to be parked in front of Wal-Mart.Â They are adding a banner that says Fill the Bus for Our Kids.Â
They are encouraging people to buy school supplies and leave them on the bus for students at Sweetwater ISD. The supplies will be donated to each campus.
Last nightâs thunderstorm in Sweetwater produced high winds that caused the destruction of a Sweetwater familyâs home after the winds blew down their trailer on the corner of Coke and Louisiana.
Three people lived in the house but were not home at the time and no injuries were reported. William Lybarger says that his family has lived in the home for 10 years.
The trailer home was paid off, but the family had no insurance on the home. The familyâs neighbors hope to set up a benefit bank account for the family.

Sweetwater High School and Sweetwater Middle School cheerleaders recently attended Universal CheerleadingÂ AssociationÂ camp in San Angelo. Â
The SHS cheerleaders won many blue superior ribbons in dance and cheer. SHS was named camp champions in the varsity division in cheer, game dayÂ preparation and fight song.
"The SHS cheerleaders worked extremely hard and are ready for football season," said Kassidi Seaton, cheer sponsor.Â "Big Red, Katie Fox, attended camp with the cheerleaders and learned many new skits and techniques." Â
22-year-old Nicholas Barton of Sweetwater, a paramedic with the Sweetwater Fire Department, was critically injured in a motorcycle wreck on Wednesday morning in Fisher County.
Barton was eastbound on his motorcycle on FM 57 at 9:15 a.m. A westbound Dodge Ram pickup turned in front of Barton, and the motorcycle collided with the passenger side of the Dodge.
Barton was taken to University Medical Center in Lubbock in critical condition.
Nolan County Attorney Administrative Assistant Kandy Myers recently retired from her position at the Nolan County Courthouse after 13 years of service.

Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, Chamber members, community members, friends and family helped to mark the official opening of the new Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital Physicians Clinic with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday morning.
Doctors who will be in the new clinic are Dr. Robert Eaker, Dr. Summer Walthall, Dr. Tim Jones, Dr. Ron Dennis and Family Nurse Practitioner Marcie Crisp.
