Sweetwater-Pampa baseball playoff time and location changed

Sweetwater and Pampa have changed the time and location for Game 1 of their best-of-3 Region I-3A area baseball playoff today.
The teams have agreed to move the game — which was to have been played at Lubbock Christian University starting at 7:30 p.m. — to Lubbock Cooper High School's field in Woodrow starting at 8:30 p.m., said Sweetwater athletic director Shane Mobley. The change was necessitated by rains in Lubbock that made LCU's field unplayable today.

Rain and hail in Nolan County

One vehicle was involved in an accident in front of K-Mart on Thursday afternoon.
A jack knifed 18-wheeler slowed the east bound traffic on Interstate 20 for a while as pea sized hail and rain hit Nolan County.
No injuries were reported. The Nolan County Sheriff's Office, TxDOT and DPS responded to the wreck.

S&C awarded $2.6 million contract to upgrade 585 MW local wind farm

S&C Electric Company, a global leader in renewable energy integration, announced it was awarded a $2.6MM contract by Sweetwater Wind to upgrade a portion of their 585 MW wind farm in Sweetwater, Texas. This upgrade will enable Sweetwater Wind to meet new renewable energy generation interconnection standards that have been enacted in Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT).

Thankful during Nurses Week

Local parents wished a Happy Nurses Week to all of the NICU nurses that did everything to make sure they were able to bring home a healthy baby, their son, Marcus Antonio Gonzales, son of Derek and Amanda Gonzales of Sweetwater.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 62 calls for service, issued five citations and made four arrests on May 8, 2013.

The SPD received 34, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 700 block of W. Fourth.
• 1500 block of Lamar.
• 900 block of Lamar.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 900 block of Brookside.
• Terroristic threat — 700 block of E. Third.
• Minor in possession — 300 block of Lamar.
• Burglary of a vehicle — 1600 block of Josephine.

Arrested by SPD:
• Sonya Flores, 26 — Driving while license invalid.
• Michael Smith, 32 — Warrants.
• Joseph Guerrero, 28 — Warrants.

Today will be cloudy with a high near 77, with northeast winds at 10 to 15 mph. Gusts could be as high as 20 mph, and we also have a 40% chance of showers and thunderstorms.
Those chances drop to 30% tonight, but we'll see mostly cloudy conditions and a low around 55. Winds will be from the east at 5 to 10 mph, becoming light and variable.

Bond election for STEM Research Center in Roscoe this Saturday

On Saturday, May 11, registered voters in Roscoe have the opportunity to head to the polls to cast their vote in a bond election approved by the Roscoe Collegiate Independent School District (RCISD) Board of Trustees for the construction of a $3.5 million Capstone Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) Research Center.
Regular voting will take place on Saturday, May 11 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the RCISD Cafetorium, located at 1201 West 7th Street in Roscoe.

City election on Saturday

This Saturday, registered voters in Sweetwater will have the opportunity to cast a ballot for the city election.
All four precincts will vote at Sweetwater Middle School, located at 305 Lamar. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The only contested race on the city ballot is for mayor, which is between incumbent Greg Wortham and Frankie SoRelle.
However, running unopposed for Precinct 1 on the City Commission is incumbent Larry May. Ricky Castro, also an incumbent, is running unopposed for Precinct 3.

Swinging for the Cure

A Swing for the Cure Breast Cancer Golf Tournament will be held Saturday, May 11 at Sweetwater Country Club with a 9 a.m. shotgun start. Pictured here are Jill Locklar, left, and Carola Martin with some of the pink Titleist golf bags that will be given as prizes for the winning team.
The cost to play in the tournament will be $50 per person, with prizes awarded for first, second and third places. All proceeds will be used to benefit breast cancer awareness.
