County service awards presented

Four county employees were recognized during Monday morning's county commissioners meeting held at the Nolan County Courthouse.
In attendance to receive their awards were Jerry Watts, who celebrated 10 years with the county as Assistant Jail Administrator, along with county auditor Judy Kasper for her 15 years of service.
Library Circulation Clerk Eloisa Hernandez and Coliseum worker Pablo Sosa were also honored, as they celebrated 5 and 10 years, respectively, serving the county in their positions.

Torres appointed as city secretary/comptroller

The City of Sweetwater officially made an appointment for the position of City Secretary/City Comptroller during Tuesday's meeting of the Sweetwater City Commission.
Approval was given for Patty Torres to fill the role, which will be effective this Friday. Following the resignation from Carolyn Lawrence a year ago, Torres has served in an interim role while also continuing her other duties.

Seventh graders receive iPads

Incoming Sweetwater Middle School seventh graders received Apple iPads for the coming school year on Monday, making it seventh through tenth grade with the devices at Sweetwater ISD. Sixth graders will also receive iPads in the fall.

Newspaper staff receives awards

The Sweetwater Reporter staff recently received awards from the West Texas Press Association Better Newspaper Contest.
The newspaper received two third place wins — one in photography and one in advertising composition and first place in the General Excellence Division.

Neugebauer stops in Sweetwater

U.S. Representative Randy Neugebauer visited with Sweetwater and Nolan County business leaders on Monday morning at Texas State Technical College. Neugebauer talked about redistricting concerns and updated everyone on happenings in Washington.
A major point of concern he brought up was the national debt. Neugebauer stated "People, including the government, need to learn how to live within their means. We must get our fiscal house in order."

County Commissioners meet with construction company, architects on jail, courthouse projects

During Monday afternoon's session of the Nolan County Commissioners' meeting, the commissioners met with Turner Construction and Wigington Hooker and Jeffry Architects in order to discuss and determine the GMP (guaranteed maximum price) for the Nolan County Sheriff's Office and Jail.
Mike Kaiman, the vice president/general manager of Turner Construction, offered a history of the project. In mid-2012, a budget was established at the total of $9.8 million for the sheriff's office and jail.

Highland to host meet the teacher, Big Blue Preview

Highland Independent School District will be hosting their annual Meet the Teacher night and Big Blue Preview on Thursday, Aug. 22. There will be several activities during the evening including a brisket sandwich meal, meet-and-greet with teachers and an introduction of the football players and cross-country runners. 
From 5-7 p.m., the Highland PTO will be serving brisket sandwich meals in the cafeteria, $6 per plate for adults and $4 per plate for children fifth grade and younger. They will also have several door prizes.
