SEED a part of SWiFT facility Commissioning

As part of President Obama's all-of-the-above energy strategy that develops every available source of American energy, the Department of Energy and Vestas Wind Systems joined with Sandia National Laboratories and Texas Tech University to break ground on a new state-of-the-art wind turbine test facility in Lubbock. The Scaled Wind Farm Technology (SWiFT) facility is the first public facility of its kind in the world to use multiple wind turbines to measure how wind turbine wakes interact with one another in a wind farm.

Courthouse, jail construction discussed by county officials

The afternoon session of Monday's County Commissioners meeting was held in the third floor conference room and focused on issues with the remediation of the courthouse facade as well as issues pertaining to the proposed Nolan County Jail and Sheriff's Offices.

Children enjoy summer reading program

Many children have been enjoying the summer reading program at the County-City Library with reading and activities every Wednesday, as well as keeping up with their own reading logs. Shown are Jonathan Gallegos, Carinna Gallegos, Juan Carlos Dominguez and Adrianna Gallegos coloring donuts as one of their activities. Reading logs are due July 22 and the summer reading party will be next Wednesday at the library.

West Texas Centers wins award recognizing safety

West Texas Center employees drive more than 75,000 miles a month in rural West Texas providing care to more than 3,200 people.
Their superior record of safety earned West Texas Centers the Betty Hardwick Excellence in Risk Management Award presented by the Texas Council Risk Management Fund.
“Betty (Hardwick) had a high passion for good risk management and she would be most proud of (West Texas) center for their accomplishment,” said Greg Womack, Program Executive Texas Council Risk Management Fund.

Two transports made in US 84 wreck

Two people were transported on Tuesday afternoon after another 18-wheeler wreck at the US 84 bridge that is currently being repaired after being hit last year by an 18-wheeler. The road had seen several wrecks in the past few months. The Sweetwater Fire Department received the initial call for emergency services at 3 p.m. One person was transported by ambulance to Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital and another person was flown to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.

Grant to repair damaged county roads discussed

Nolan County Commissioners met Monday morning to discuss several issues involving the courthouse and Nolan County. The commissioners voted on and approved the re-instatement of the burn ban throughout the county, due to recent dry conditions.

Sweetwater Outreach Week begins Thursday

Several local churches will be coming together this week in order to reach out to the community.
This year's Sweetwater Outreach Week (SOW) will be held from Thursday, July 11 through Saturday, July 13. The purpose of the event is to offer needed assistance to homeowners by painting their house or mowing their lawn, free of charge.
There are, however, some prerequisites for a home to be considered. The homeowner must own the house (it cannot be a rental property), as well as be physically unable to meet these tasks.

Microsoft Powerpoint Advanced 2010 course takes place Friday

This summer, the Sweetwater campus of TSTC (Texas State Technical College) West Texas, located at 300 Homer K. Taylor Drive, is offering Microsoft Office Short Courses. All of the courses will be offered in the Pevehouse Building in Room 210.
"Whether you currently work in an office environment that just upgraded to Microsoft Office 2010, or just want to learn the latest features of this software, the right kind of training is essential," said course organizers. "At TSTC West Texas, we offer a variety of courses on the latest version of this popular software package."
