SEED board approves property purchase

December 12, 2013

The Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development (SEED) board of directors approved the purchase of some property at their meeting on Monday morning, which was then approved by the City Commission at their Tuesday morning meeting.
At Monday's SEED meeting, the board reviewed the Phase One study results from the Stevens property on West Broadway, located across from the Sweetwater Cattle Auction. This particular study makes sure that there are no pending environmental issues, and the report came back clean.

Seed Survivor Mobile Exhibit visits Roscoe ISD

The Seed Survivor Mobile Exhibit, a plant nutrient classroom on wheels, visited Roscoe ISD Tuesday morning. The exhibit is used to introduce the younger generation to the importance of agriculture production of food and fiber, which supplies our nation's needs to survive and exist. Seed Survivor is a free, curriculum-based learning experience that encourages children in grades 1 through 6 to master the elements that plants need to grow.

Two arrested after high speed chase

A pursuit involving a stolen vehicle and multiple law enforcement entities came to a conclusion on Monday afternoon at the intersection of Fisher and Avenue A.
According to Lieutenant Randy Hanes with the Sweetwater Police Department, the vehicle used in the pursuit was stolen on Sunday evening. Eventually, the vehicle was spotted by Officer Moses Campa, which started the pursuit.
The suspects made an effort to flee, in which Hanes explained that the pursuit became dangerous at one point. The vehicle was driven on the wrong side of the interstate for at least a mile’s distance.

Nolan County receives Leadership Circle - Gold Member award

Nolan County recently received an award from the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, which was acknowledged during Monday morning's meeting of the county commissioners.
Judge Tim Fambrough explained that the Leadership Circle - Gold Member award recognizes local government entities who are financially transparent. They set the example for others to follow by sharing their information in a user-friendly format, notably online.
County employees Judy Kaspar and Jeanne Wells were recognized for their work which led to the receiving of the award.

Goodfellows distribute food, toys

The Sweetwater Goodfellows held their food and toy distribution on Monday, helping many families with Christmas toys for children of Nolan County that they might not have otherwise.
Many volunteers — including individuals, organizations and businesses, contributed their time at the distribution and Christmas party.

Three events in Roscoe to benefit burn victim

An area family is doing their part to help a relative recover from a serious wreck.
The family of Michael McFaul will be holding three events on Saturday, December 14 in Roscoe. All proceeds from the events will be given to his benefit account, which was established in order to provide financial support for McFaul's rising medical expenses as well as the growing cost of airfare to send family to be by his side for emotional and physical support.
McFaul is currently in the Grady Hospital Burn Unit in Atlanta, GA. His family resides in Texas, which is over 1,100 miles away.

Nolan County earns safety award

Nolan County has earned a 2012 Safety Award from the Texas Association of Counties (TAC) for its record of involvement and commitment to safety in the workplace, as well as for controlling the county's workers' compensation claims.
To qualify for this award, the county must self-insure its workers' compensation through the Texas Association of Counties Risk Pool Management, and successfully complete the safety award criteria.
Nolan County was one of only 27 counties honored with an award during an Oct. 28 ceremony at the TAC Pool Symposium in San Marcos.
