Lambert receives alumni scholarship

Kyle Lambert, 2013 senior at Sweetwater High School who will be attending Texas Tech University in the fall, majoring in Animal Science, received the Texas Tech Alumni Scholarship for the upcoming academic year. Lambert is pictured with Texas Tech Alumni Robert Whitteker receiving his award.

To meet area demand, TSTC West Texas adds 20 new slots to fall ADN program

Texas State Technical College West Texas is now accepting students into the Associates Degree Nursing (ADN) program this Fall for the first time. Traditionally, the college has had only two entrance periods per year. Due to of the high demand for qualified nurses, TSTC West Texas will take in additional cohort of 20 students this fall.

A sign of summer

Cicada shells are usually a sign that summer has arrived and that the insects have burst onto our summer scene in Texas, but rarely does one get the chance to witness the process as it happens. This particular cicada was attached to the side of a Sweetwater home as it molted.
Shown, the cicada is next to its abandoned shell, now split and fully empty. The cicada will eventually adopt different colors once its new body hardens.

Pet available for adoption at animal shelter

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has one puppy available for adoption.
Available for adoption is a male pit mix puppy.
According to Sweetwater’s animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.

Benefit lunch on Sunday

A benefit lunch for Fidel "Pancho" Albarran, who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, will be held Sunday, June 9 at the Roscoe Community Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mr. Albarran has been an employee for the City of Roscoe for over 20 years. Menu items are homemade beef or chicken enchiladas, beans, rice, tea, and banana pudding. Dine in or carry out. All proceeds will go towards Mr. Albarran's trips to Lubbock for treatment. Mark David Manders to perform at Fourth Annual "Blue Agave" Bar-B-Que and Chili Cook-Off

The Fourth Annual "Blue Agave" Bar-B-Que and Chili Cook-Off will be held today in Blackwell. The event is "Lone Star" and "CASI" sanctioned, which will include brisket, ribs, chicken and beans. There will also be margarita and Bloody Mary pour-offs. A concert and dance featuring Mark David Manders will be held thirty minutes after dark. The 32nd Annual Texaco Country Showdown is coming to Nolan County. KXOX AM/FM will host America's largest country music talent search and radio promotion. Approximately $200,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded nationwide including the Grand Prize of $100,000 cash to the National Winner, presented at the National Final televised special.

Nolan County Crime Stoppers announce Crimes of the Week

The Nolan County Crime Stoppers have announced two Crimes of the Week.
On Thursday, May 16, 2013, a burglary was reported to the Sweetwater Police Department. It was reported that sometime between Wednesday, May 15 and Thursday, May 16, 2013 unknown person(s) entered a business located on the north side of town near FM 1544 and Elm. The unknown person(s) stole several large items as well as tools, ladders and smaller items.
