Melendez honored as Teacher Tribute Winner

Sweetwater High School Spanish Teacher, Tina Melendez was honored as Arrow Ford's Teacher Tribute Winner. She was nominated by Joe Alaniz, a sophomore at Sweetwater High School.

Affordable Care Act explained at Jan. 22 Lunch and Learn Seminar

The Affordable Care Act is now in full swing and many Nolan County residents are still puzzled as to what this means to them and their families. Helping resolve any uncertainties and getting you covered is what Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) hopes to accomplish at their next Lunch and Learn Seminar on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
Christal Martin with the West Central Texas Council of Governments will be the guest speaker at the upcoming event. She will present critical information about the Affordable Care Act, often referred to as “Obamacare”.

Area student selected as Texas All-State Musician

Crysten Ivy, a member of the Sweetwater Mighty Mustang Band will perform with the Texas All-State Band in San Antonio on Saturday, Feb. 15, 2014 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center as part of the 2014 Texas Music Educators Association Clinic/Convention. She was chosen for this honor through a competitive process held this year across the state at District, Region and Area levels.

A large crowd of concerned citizens came to voice their opinion on the proposed rule that would prohibit the use of noxious substances to capture nongame wildlife at the final public hearing held by the Texas Parks and Wildlife on Friday at the local TSTC (Texas State Technical College).

Meet and greet for Republican candidates slated for Wednesday

The Republican Women of West Texas has arranged a "Meet and Greet" meeting for Republican candidates wanting to serve the citizens of Nolan County.
The meeting will be held Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, starting at 10 a.m. at the Church of Christ Activity Center located at the corner of Elm and 5th Street in Sweetwater.
Larry May, Nolan County Republican Chairman, will introduce each candidate who will have five minutes to speak.

Funding from TWDB discussed by city

An ordinance was adopted at Tuesday's City Commission meeting authorizing the issuance of the certificates of obligation in the principal amount of $1.9 million from the city to the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB).
Andrew Friedman with Southwest Securities told the commissioners that it was time to authorize the federal interest rates. The principal amount of $1,935,000 would be paid in 2015 to minimize the impact, with $19,000 of that amount being interest. The total amount would be under a 20-year debt service agreement.

Social media marketing luncheon well attended

A Social Media Marketing Luncheon was held Thursday at the Nolan County Coliseum. Sarah T. Page, who leads her own consulting firm, presented twenty ideas on how to market a business through the use of social media.
The luncheon was hosted by the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce.
The goal of the luncheon was to demystify social media--such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other websites--to determine what works for each business. In many instances, trial and error is the best way to find success.

Donations made to local ag programs

Each year approximately 200 FFA and 4-H youth participate in the Nolan County Junior Livestock Show. These exhibitors invest countless hours in their projects - steers, hogs, lambs, goats, chickens and rabbits - with homes of earning the Grand Champion prize during the 2014 show.
The livestock show is currently taking place, Jan. 14-18, 2014. The winning exhibitors will be eligible to sell their projects in the Premium Sale, held on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014.

SFD to purchase new rescue truck

At Tuesday's City Commission meeting, approval was given to increase the city's pension contribution to the Sweetwater Fireman's Relief and Retirement Fund.
The request for the one percent increase--from 15% to 16%--came from the group's board of directors. The 15% rate has been in effect since 2000, and prior to that time the rate stood at 12%.
The board of the Sweetwater Fireman's Relief and Retirement Fund has held several meetings, and a ballot was given to firefighters to vote on the increase. 25 votes were submitted in support the new rate.
