At the January meeting of the Sweetwater ISD (Independent School District) Board of Trustees, a proclamation was presented by Sweetwater Mayor Greg Wortham declaring January as School Board Appreciation Month.
The document explained the role of a school board member, whose commitment to children in becoming successful learners comes about by tailoring education to a child's individual needs. By working closely with parents, educational professionals and other community members, school board members have the responsibility of ensuring a foundational structure for the school system.

Members of the Nolan County Foundation are announcing their annual Golf Classic has been scheduled for Saturday, April 19, 2014 at the Sweetwater Country Club.
According to Homer Taylor, President and Executive Director of the NCF, this event is the main source of funds for this annual college scholarship event. Started nine years ago, the NCF has already awarded 199 Nolan County graduating seniors $1,000 each to begin their college careers at any Texas college or university.
Recently, the Sweetwater High School DECA team competed in district competition and brought home many honors.
Sweetwater High School Senior Caroline Lawrence was crowned the 2014 Yucca Queen on Saturday evening.

As progress on the US 70-Business (Lamar Street) reconstruction project continues, a traffic change across from Sweetwater Middle School is planned for Monday, Jan. 27.
At 9 a.m. crews will close the lane on the far west side of the street for curb and gutter removal. The southbound inside lane will be open to facilitate school traffic during the early morning, afternoon and evening hours, but some temporary closures will be necessary between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Northbound and southbound traffic will have access to the school at all times.
Today will be partly sunny with a high near 35, but wind chill values will be between 10 and 20. Winds will be breezy with a north-northeast wind at 20 to 25 mph, decreasing to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 35 mph.
Expect mostly cloudy conditions tonight, with a low around 16 and wind chill values between 7 and 12. Winds will be from the east-northeast at 10 to 15 mph.

The Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium now boasts a number of updates and new features, and the board is excited about the possibility of even more with the participation of the community.
Some of the recent improvements include the new tinted front doors and new lobby carpeting. Add that to the renovated downstairs bathrooms and the replacement cushioned seats upstairs and residents have a more comfortable and convenient venue.
The Meet and Greet the Candidate hosted by the Republican Women of West Texas will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, at the Church of Christ Activity Center located at the corner of Elm and Fifth Street in Sweetwater. Twelve Republican candidates have accepted the invitation to speak.

Sweetwater natives Paul Bryan Scott and his wife Vicki Hobbs Scott have returned to their hometown after more than 30 years. "Vicki and I had entertained the thought of moving back to Sweetwater throughout the years, but have just now been able to do so," said Paul. "We want to be closer to our family and friends from the area," Vicki added. "We miss the West Texas atmosphere as well."
