The March 4 primary election will be here before we know it, but several other deadlines are fast approaching.
The first day of early voting will be Tuesday, Feb. 18, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, in the County Clerk's office, which is located in the Nolan County Courthouse (100 East Third), Suite 108. The last day of early voting will be Friday, Feb. 28.
Friday, Feb. 21, is the last day for the County Clerk to receive an application to vote by mail.
On Election Day on Tuesday, March 4, polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Representative Susan King hosted the Sweetwater Jaycees (Junior Chamber of Commerce) from Monday, Feb. 10 through Wednesday, Feb. 12, at the Texas State Capitol Outdoor Rotunda. For the eighth year in a row, Rep. King arranged for her colleagues in the House to get an up close and personal view of life in West Texas. The Sweetwater Jaycees took over duties of the Rattlesnake Roundup 52 years ago and have made been coming to the Capitol a tradition.
A woman was flown to an Abilene hospital in stable condition on Friday morning by Air Evac after a wreck on Interstate 20. It took members of the Sweetwater Fire Department 30 minutes to extricate her from the vehicle.
The new Allsupâ€™s opened at 5 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12 and, even though itâ€™s store number one in
Sweetwater, itâ€™s the three hundred and nineteenth store in the Allsupâ€™s line-up; proving that initiative and hard work continue to pay off for Lonnie and Barbara Allsup.
The Allsupâ€™s bought their first store in 1956 in Roswell, N.M. They opened with $200 in stock, $5,000 worth of fixtures and $400 of working capital. Working the store himself, Allsup said he gave it his all and, within the first year and a half, he had increased the volume from $4,000 to $20,000 per month.
At Tuesday's City Commission meeting, approval was given to an ordinance ordering the city election to be held on Saturday, May 10.
The purpose of the election, which is the date set for the state elections, is to vote for two city commissioners in Precincts 2 and 4. The seats are currently filled by Jim McKenzie and Jerod Peek, respectively.
At the meeting, all commissioners were given an election calendar in their packets, which outlines several dates and timelines that are part of the election process.
The driver of a Federal Express ground truck was making a daily pick-up at the office Creative Graphic Solutions on 1107 E. Broadway in Sweetwater on Thursday when the truck caught fire. The Sweetwater Fire Department extinguished the blaze quickly and no packages were lost to the fire.
There will be a shooting sports club meeting at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16, at the 4-H shooting range.
