Shooting in Sweetwater

At around approximately 12:50 p.m. on Friday afternoon, the Sweetwater Police Department received multiple 9-1-1 calls regarding shots fired at the 700 block of Bluff Street, according to Sweetwater Chief of Police Brian Frieda.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers located one individual who was suffering from a gunshot wound in the upper leg area, near the groin. The victim was identified as 32-year-old Merced Flores.
The alleged suspect — identified as Eduardo Echegaray — had fled the scene prior to the officers' arrival. It was reported that he fled in a silver Volkswagen sedan.

RPMH to offer medical student stipend to former SHS student

At the May meeting of the Nolan County Hospital District's board of directors held at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH), the group was introduced to Leila Rubio, a recent graduate of Hardin Simmons University.
The twenty-one year old was accepted to the medical school at Texas Tech University and will begin a three-year accelerated program this July. She has local ties to the community, as she grew up in Sweetwater and graduated as valedictorian of Sweetwater High School in 2011.

Local church to offer weekly summer program

4th and Elm Church of Christ is kicking off a weekly summer program called "Wednesday Night Live."
Starting on June 4, the summertime children's ministry Chaos will start its fourth year. Located inside the church building, elementary age students will enjoy live drama, puppets, worship, crafts, snack and games.
But the children won't be the only ones taking part in a good time. At the same time, teenagers and adults will meet in the Warehouse for a Bible lesson, drama, videos, icebreaker games and discussion.

Students recognized by school board

The TMSCA (Texas Math and Science Coaches Association) team from Sweetwater Middle School advanced to the state competition and was honored with a resolution during the May meeting of the Sweetwater ISD Board of Trustees.

Know who to call when encountered with a young wild animal

Every year, particularly during the spring and summer, hundreds of young wild animals are unnecessarily picked up by the general public and referred to game wardens or wildlife rehabilitators for treatment and rearing. The most commonly referred animals are baby birds and deer fawns. While most of these animals are picked up by well-meaning persons, it is important to realize that many such human-animal encounters are unnecessary and can even be detrimental to the wildlife concerned.

Chamber welcomes All Things Printed

Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, along with other Chamber members, welcomed All Things Printed to Sweetwater with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday.
Owner Lindsay Sanders said that she opened her business from home a year ago and was excited to continue to serve Sweetwater and the surrounding area with her new office at 113 W. Third Street. The business offers printing services for items such as business cards, invitation, posters and banners with free set-up.

Rawlings named SMS Teacher of the Year

Tiffany Rawlings was named the Teacher of the Year for Sweetwater Middle School and was also honored as Secondary Teacher of the Year for Sweetwater ISD.
She is the art teacher for grades 6 through 8 and has been teaching for a total of 21 years. Rawlings has been teaching at Sweetwater ISD for four years.
She earned her BFA in Art Education from Texas Tech University. She is a member of the Texas Art Education Association, as well as the National Art Education Association.
