SHS Volleyball practices begin Monday

July 31, 2014

Sweetwater High School volleyball practices will begin Monday, Aug. 4 at the SHS gym. The morning session on Aug. 4 will get started with roll check at 6:30 a.m. and continue until a lunch break from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., according to coach Liz Miller. The afternoon session will be held from 1-3:45 p.m., and hitters and setters will remain at the gym to practice from 3:45-4:15 p.m.

Joint Replacement: When you should look into it

Dr. James Marvel, M.D., Orthopedic Surgeon at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH), was the guest speaker at July’s Lunch and Learn Seminar on joint replacement. Using actual operating tools, including one of his own design, Dr. Marvel explained the process of a full knee replacement and demonstrated the different parts that go into a new knee (shown).
He explained that, in most cases, a total joint replacement should be looked into after all other avenues are exhausted, especially if the patient is young.

AJRA Finals Rodeo in full swing

County commissioners approve server upgrades

The Nolan County Commissioners met on Monday morning and approved a server upgrade for the Sheriff's Department.
The upgrade had been discussed as part of recent budget hearings. Due to the fact that the Sheriff's Office will be in a new location and along with security concerns, the sheriff's department will need their own server.
Additionally, the server for the Justice of the Peace will be getting some sort of server upgrade, after the office was informed that their current server will only be supported for one more year.

Today, July 31, Story Hour at the County-City Library for parents and their children will be held at 10:45 a.m.
Library Staff will lead the parents and children in stories and songs. Call 235-4978 for more information or go to www.sweetwaterlibrary.org.
Also, sign-ups for Sweetwater Youth Soccer will be held tonight from 5 to 7 p.m. at Hibbet Sports for children ages 4-12 as of September 1.

WASP Museum receives Patrick Henry award

The National WASP WWII Museum in Sweetwater was presented the Patrick Henry award for dedication, patriotism and efforts in WWII by the Military Order of the World Wars (MOWW). The MOWW is a unique veterans organization that promotes and encourages good citizenship, patriotic education, military and public service, national security, and youth programs.

The National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS) announced Highland School student Kevin Pantoja from Roscoe, TX, has been selected to become a member of the esteemed organization.The Society recognizes top scholars who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, scholarship, and community commitment.
