The Sweetwater Community Captains recently hosted a school supply drive and collected enough supplies and money to give backpacks and supplies to students in grades Kindergarten through fifth grade. The supplies will be distributed to Sweetwater schools to be given to students in need. School resumes Monday for most area schools, including Sweetwater Independent School District (SISD).
With that in mind, Sweetwater Police Chief Brian Frieda has a warning for motorists: "driver's beware."
"We've new kids coming into to Southeast (Elementary), we've got parents who will be delivering kids to Southeast for the first time," Frieda said. "There's a lot of one-ways hidden around various schools. You have to remember, school zones that are not on the state highway system do not have flashing yellow lights.
A community blood drive will be held at First Financial Bank in Sweetwater on Wednesday, Sept. 3. The Meek Blood Center bloodmobile will accept donations from 12 p.m. until 6 p.m.
"We are asking donors to please remember that the need for blood is constant. Even the regular of blood donors get busy in the summer with vacations and other activities and forget to donate blood. Blood donation only takes about an hour, and that hour could give someone else a lifetime," said Frances Baker, donor recruiter for Meek Blood Center.
Firefighters battled a grass fire on CR 238 near CR 181 in the southwest part of Nolan County on Thursday. The blaze was started by a faulty electrical line going to a pump jack and burned approximately 20 acres.

Sweetwater ISD hosted a Red Run on Friday morning to help start the school year off strong.
Faculty and staff members, as well as students and community members were invited to the 8 a.m. run. All who attended showed their school spirit by wearing red and white.
Dye stations were set up along the route to throw red powder at the runners, covering them head to toe by the end of the race.

The recent scores of Sweetwater High School students who took the ACT test last year have been released, which account for the 63 students that took the test from the Class of 2014.
SHS students scored above the state scores in all areas--English, mathematics, reading and science, with the widest margin seen in Mathematics at 1.2% over the state average. Overall, the district's composite score was 21.7, in comparison to the state score of 20.9.
Sweetwater High Schoolâ€™s cheerleaders were at Mustang Bowl for Thursdayâ€™s final football scrimmage against Clyde to encourage the Mustangs in their last tuneup for the regular season.
Fall sports athletes at SHS were introduced throughout the evening as well as the school band and student trainers.
