Hospital issues immunization season reminder for families

Tens of thousands of individuals across the U.S. die each year as a result of illnesses preventable through widely available vaccinations. As National Immunization Awareness Month is celebrated during August, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) is urging parents and guardians to ensure children — and the entire family for that matter — are up-to-date with important immunizations before the popular back-to-school rush.

Community Captains host school supply drive

The Sweetwater Community Captains hosted a school supply drive over the weekend. Shown are Heidi Schlemmer, Lesleigh Hodges, Marquees Jenkins, Andrew Davis and Nemesis Armstead.
The supplies will be donated to students in local schools.

Local AARP meeting tonight

Tonight, August 18, the Nolan County Chapter 2209 of AARP will meet at the SNAP building at 6:30 p.m. A business meeting and music program will be presented.
A meal of sandwiches, chips, dips and ice cream will be served. Please come and bring a dish.

The Cowboys fell to the Ravens 37-30 on Saturday night, but the team had two very bright spots. Tony Romo was solid in his debut, throwing a touchdown, and Zach Minter, just signed on Thursday, recorded 2 sacks and forced a fumble.

SHS alum to compete in bodybuilding competition

A Sweetwater High alumnus is heading to his first competition in bodybuilding.
Dylon Adames, a 2012 graduate of Sweetwater High School and third-year student at Texas Tech University, will compete at the NPC (National Physique Committee) Heart of Texas at the Ridglea Theater in Fort Worth on Saturday, Sept. 13.
Adames had always been lifting weights as part of football training, but when the opportunity to play fell through, he began committing himself to fully pursuing bodybuilding. Since February, he was been working toward the competition.

Diphtheria: Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department monthly focus on diseases

Diphtheria once was a major cause of illness and death among children. The U.S. recorded 206,000 cases of diphtheria in 1921, resulting in 15,520 deaths. Before there was treatment for diphtheria, up to half of the people who got the disease died from it.

Hunter Well Field project nears completion

After more than a year of planning, constructing and drilling, the Hunter Well Field is nearly ready to pump fresh water to Sweetwater residents.
The wells — which run approximately 200 feet deep — will help ease the water burden the city has faced since Oak Creek Reservoir ran dry in late 2013. City engineers Enprotec Hibbs & Todd estimates the wells' production capacity to be anywhere from 900,000 to one million gallons of water per day. City officials have pegged the number at 750,000-900,000 gallons.

Blown transformer causes large fire

Many entities have been battling a blaze on the 69 Ranch near Maryneal since Friday. The cause of the grass fire was said to have been a blown transformer and volunteer firefighters have stated that the fire has been hard to access, with part being in a ravine and also burning on two sides of a nearby railroad track. Shown in the photos is a train trestle bridge burning.

Square dance classes to begin locally

Starting on Monday, Sept. 8, a new square dancing class will begin.
The class will be held from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Jack Lambert Recreation Room, located at 604 Jack Lambert Drive in Sweetwater.
In square dancing, eight people work together as a team as they execute the choreographed routines timed to fit current-day popular songs.
Square dancing has been the National Dance for over 200 years and is the state folk dance of 17 states, including Texas. Couples, singles and teens participate in square dancing across the U.S. and internationally.
