New jail to ease law enforcement, taxpayer burdens

It's been a long process with several delays along the way, but Sheriff David Warren said recently in an interview with the Reporter that the new jail, when completed in May 2015, will ease a lot of burdens for both his staff and the taxpayers who funded the project.
The main issue: the current jail located at the Nolan County Courthouse was simply too small to house the amount of prisoners the county needs, according to Sheriff David Warren.

AgriLife Extension sets Oct. 14 farm bill decision making program in Roscoe

ROSCOE – The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will offer a free farm bill decision-aid program for producers from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at the Roscoe Coop Gin in Roscoe.

Grant approved for SISD, Municipal Auditorium autumn arts presentations

Sweetwater resident Mila Gibson, governor-appointed Commissioner for Texas Commission on the Arts, recently returned from a TCA meeting in Austin where Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium and Sweetwater Independent School District each received approval for grant funding for autumn arts presentations.

Sweetwater Softball Church League in its third year

One person's desire for a family-friendly function has grown into a community-wide gathering.
For the past three years, the Sweetwater Softball Church League has met on Tuesdays starting in August at the high school softball fields. The league was started by Todd Henderson, a member of Emmanuel Fellowship Church.

Fuller Foods to sponsor Fourth Annual BBQ-ing in the Wind Steak Cook-Off

The Fourth Annual "BBQ-ing in the Wind" Steak Cook Off will be held on Saturday, Oct. 18, in Roscoe during the West Texas Wind Festival. The event is sponsored by Fuller Food in Colorado City.

Today, October 10, SISD will have an Early Release Day. The time schedule is as follows: J.P. Cowen and Southeast Elementary — 12:15 p.m.; East Ridge Elementary — 12:20 p.m.; Sweetwater High School — 12:50 p.m.; Sweetwater Intermediate — 12:55 p.m.; and Sweetwater Middle School — 1 p.m. Dismissal time for employees will be 1:15 p.m.
Tonight, the Roscoe Plowgirl Athletic Program will have a stuffed baked potato supper before the game against Baird from 4:30-7 p.m. in the Roscoe Collegiate ISD Cafetorium.

Today will be partly sunny with a high near 83. Winds will be from the south at 5 to 15 mph, and after 1 p.m., we'll have a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms.
Those rain chances will bump up to 70% tonight through 1 a.m., with mostly cloudy skies and a low around 51. Winds will shift to the north at 5 to 15 mph.
For the weekend, we'll start off with rain chances, which will diminish and return on Sunday night. Expect weekend highs to increase from mid-60s on Saturday to upper 80s on Sunday, with lows in the mid 50s. Winds will vary but will increase through Sunday.
