Local forecast for Tuesday

Today will be mostly sunny with a high near 95. Winds will be from the south around 15 mph, and after 1 p.m. we'll have a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms.
Those rain chances will bump up to 30 percent tonight, with partly cloudy skies and a low around 70. Winds will come from the south-southeast at 5 to 10 mph.

Lions Club to host 4th of July Parade

Celebrate Independence Day in Sweetwater at the Annual Lions Club 4th of July Parade on Friday, July 4, beginning at 10 a.m.
Those who wish to participate in the parade are asked to begin lining up along the 200 block of Ash Street at 9:30 a.m. The parade will then begin at 10 a.m. Parade viewers can watch as the parade makes its way south on Ash Street to Broadway, then east on Broadway to turn onto Elm Street, where it will head towards Newman Park. The parade will then come to its end in the Nolan County Coliseum parking lot.

Shaving for a cause

First Baptist Church hosted Vacation Bible School this past week. They used "Agency D3" (Discover, Decide, Defend) curriculum from Lifeway and raised money for missions.
They raised $483 — enough money to send clean water to a village and a goat to a family through Heifer International. As a reward for the fund raising effort, Lisa Eaker kissed a goat, Renee Ross took a pie to the face and Tique Hamilton shaved his beard (shown).

Early morning house fire consumes home

June 30, 2014

An early morning fire that began around 5 a.m. on Monday engulfed a home near Fifteenth and Vine Streets in Sweetwater.
The house was a total loss and was caused by an electrical problem with an air conditioning unit that was in a front window of the home. The homeowner was not home at the time of the fire.

DHRD donates to Meals on Wheels

Proceeds from the Oh Snap! Summer Slam, the most recent DHRD home game, went to the SNAP and Meals on Wheels Program.

Forms for Jump Rope Camp are due today, June 30. The camp will be held August 4-6 for students completing grades Kindergarten through fourth.
Third and fourth graders will attend from 9 a.m. to noon, and Kindergarten through second graders will attend from 1-3 p.m. Camp will be held at the Sweetwater Intermediate School gym.

Local girls set up lemonade stand to benefit Berry Family

Two local girls, Ayezha DeLeon (left) and Marissa Johnson (right), both 10 years-old, set up a stand to sell pickles and lemonade with the help of DeLeon’s mother, Diane Little. The girls wanted to raise money to help with funeral expenses for the Berry Family, who recently lost their family member, Michael Berry. Johnson said that he was a friend and he “was like a family member to us.”
The girls started making the stand around 6:30 a.m. on Friday and set up shortly after on Hiawatha Street. By about 4:30 p.m. they had raised about $75.

Aglow International to host spaghetti dinner
