Blown transformer causes large fire

Many entities have been battling a blaze on the 69 Ranch near Maryneal since Friday. The cause of the grass fire was said to have been a blown transformer and volunteer firefighters have stated that the fire has been hard to access, with part being in a ravine and also burning on two sides of a nearby railroad track. Shown in the photos is a train trestle bridge burning.

Square dance classes to begin locally

Starting on Monday, Sept. 8, a new square dancing class will begin.
The class will be held from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Jack Lambert Recreation Room, located at 604 Jack Lambert Drive in Sweetwater.
In square dancing, eight people work together as a team as they execute the choreographed routines timed to fit current-day popular songs.
Square dancing has been the National Dance for over 200 years and is the state folk dance of 17 states, including Texas. Couples, singles and teens participate in square dancing across the U.S. and internationally.

Chamber hosts luncheon for new Sweetwater teachers

The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce held their annual New Teacher Luncheon on Thursday at The Center at the local TSTC (Texas State Technical College) West Texas campus.
The new teachers were welcomed by Chamber President Zollie Steakley, who made some remarks along with Sweetwater ISD Superintendent Terry Pittman. Twenty-five new teachers were introduced at the gathering.
Three of the new teachers will teach at TSTC: Shannon Weir, Jerry Johnson and Joe Lucas. Within Sweetwater ISD, J.P. Cowen Early Childhood Center will welcome Stephanie Harrell and Salvador Barrego.

Cloverton to perform at Emmanuel Fellowship

Tonight, August 15, Maryneal Baptist Church will be having revival services through Sunday the 17th featuring Billy Oliver with music by Randy and Vicki Hanes.
Services will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday and 6 p.m. on Saturday. Sunday's schedule will be 10 a.m. for Sunday School, 11 a.m. for morning worship, 12 noon for a lunch at the Community Center and a final service for 6 p.m.
On Saturday, the clothes closet at First United Methodist Church, located at 309 Cedar, will be open from 9-11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16. Clothes are free to anyone in need.

For the weekend, we should expect highs in the mid to upper 90s. Winds will mainly come from the south at 10 to 15 mph, and starting on Saturday afternoon, a 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms will remain in the area through Sunday evening.

Local employers have difficulty filling jobs

Nolan County has been virtually recession proof. As most of the nation has struggled to recover from the worst economic downturn in more than 75 years, Sweetwater and surrounding areas has remained a bastion of employment.
In fact, Ken Becker, executive director at Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development (SEED), estimates the percentage of Nolan County residents out of work to be just over four percent — lower than the state of Texas and the U.S. averages.

Campbell pinned as SFD's new assistant fire chief

The Sweetwater Fire Department has promoted from within a new assistant fire chief. Lance Campbell was officially named to the position Tuesday by Chief Grant Madden.
Campbell, a 15-year veteran of the department, passed the required promotional exams and met the criteria. Madden believes he will be a good successor to former assistant chief Chris Kiser.
"Lance was hired on right after I was," Madden said. "I've worked with him my entire career. I know he has great leadership skills, we just haven't had a chance to see them yet."

Reid recognized as Best Newspaper Carrier

It takes a team effort get the daily newspaper constructed, published and delivered. And the youngest member of the Sweetwater Reporter family is ten-year-old Christian Reid.
Reid is a newspaper carrier whose route is on the northeast side of Sweetwater. The route is under his mother's name, Jennifer Gardner, who was recently named the Sweetwater Reporter's "Readers' Choice" winner for Best Newspaper Carrier.
