Cormier indicted for attempted capital murder of a peace officer

December 2, 2014

A Nolan County Grand Jury recently indicted 22 people. Six of those indictments were sealed. The following cases were true-billed:
Brandon Joseph Cormier was indicted on two counts — attempted capital murder of a peace officer, a first degree felony enhanced with one prior felony conviction and aggravated assault against a public servant, a first degree felony enhanced with one prior felony conviction.

FFB to host coffee, open house

December 2, 2014

The December Chamber Coffee event will be held at First Financial Bank on Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 10 a.m. This year, FFB will also host their annual Open House at this time, beginning at 10 a.m. and ending at noon. Everyone is invited to attend and come and go as they please. Refreshments will be served in the lobby of the bank, located at 201 Elm Street.

New Microtel Inn & Suites completes ‘the topping out’ for Sweetwater’s newest hotel

A milestone in the construction of the new Microtel Inn & Suites by Wyndham located at 9416 N. Interstate 20 was celebrated as Harmon Construction watched as a truss crane hoisted one of the beams atop the new tower keeping the anticipated Spring opening on schedule.

Smith sworn in as constable

December 1, 2014

Stephen F. Smith II was sworn in as constable Wednesday by 32nd Judicial District Court Judge Glen Harrison. Smith was appointed by the Nolan County Commissioners Court to fill the unexpired term of former constable Will Lenoir, who passed away in September.

Burned train trestle to be rebuilt

December 1, 2014

On August 15, 2014, a grass fire burned down a rail crossing bridge approximately nine miles south of Interstate 20. The Texas Oklahoma Railroad operates on the Shortline tracks that extend from Interstate 20 south to Maryneal.

Lion escape

Isaiah McGee of Sweetwater escapes the grasp of a Vernon defender during a 49-27 win over the Lions on Friday, in the teams' Class 4A, Division II regional playoff held in Mineral Wells. The Mustangs will face Celina in the state quarterfinals this week.

Sweetwater the setting for Lynn Sheffield Simmons children’s book Bo and the Ghosts of Tumbleweed Ranch

Children’s book author Lynn Sheffield Simmons has made Sweetwater the setting for her latest children’s book Bo and the Ghosts of Tumbleweed Ranch. Although the story is fiction Mrs. Simmons includes the names and professions of Sweetwater Veterinarian Dr. Bud Alldredge and former Sweetwater Police Chief Jim Kelley in her new book.
The story begins with the low, rolling hills and wide-open skies of West Texas welcoming Mrs. Barnett and Bo, the loveable but mischievous black Labrador retriever, to their next adventure.

Pioneer Museum to host closing reception of Turner exhibition

The Pioneer Museum will host Tom Turner for a closing reception of his photographic exhibition, Sublime Gestures, which is currently on display in the WASP Room where the Sammy Baugh display was set up this fall, on Wednesday, December 3 at 12:00 p.m. This program was supported in part by Humanities Texas, the state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
