Burned train trestle to be rebuilt

December 1, 2014

On August 15, 2014, a grass fire burned down a rail crossing bridge approximately nine miles south of Interstate 20. The Texas Oklahoma Railroad operates on the Shortline tracks that extend from Interstate 20 south to Maryneal.

Lion escape

Isaiah McGee of Sweetwater escapes the grasp of a Vernon defender during a 49-27 win over the Lions on Friday, in the teams' Class 4A, Division II regional playoff held in Mineral Wells. The Mustangs will face Celina in the state quarterfinals this week.

Sweetwater the setting for Lynn Sheffield Simmons children’s book Bo and the Ghosts of Tumbleweed Ranch

Children’s book author Lynn Sheffield Simmons has made Sweetwater the setting for her latest children’s book Bo and the Ghosts of Tumbleweed Ranch. Although the story is fiction Mrs. Simmons includes the names and professions of Sweetwater Veterinarian Dr. Bud Alldredge and former Sweetwater Police Chief Jim Kelley in her new book.
The story begins with the low, rolling hills and wide-open skies of West Texas welcoming Mrs. Barnett and Bo, the loveable but mischievous black Labrador retriever, to their next adventure.

Pioneer Museum to host closing reception of Turner exhibition

The Pioneer Museum will host Tom Turner for a closing reception of his photographic exhibition, Sublime Gestures, which is currently on display in the WASP Room where the Sammy Baugh display was set up this fall, on Wednesday, December 3 at 12:00 p.m. This program was supported in part by Humanities Texas, the state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Update: Leanos arrested in Abilene

Officials with the Sweetwater Police Department were searching for a man wanted for three warrants — two being felonies — on Friday morning.
Juan Leanos was being sought for theft of property over $50 and under $500, a misdemeanor; theft of property over $1,500 and under $2,000, a felony; and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, also a felony.

Over 800 fed by Sweetwater Jaycees

The Sweetwater Jaycees delivered over 800 meals to local residents on Thanksgiving Day during their annual feed. The Jaycees also expected at least 100 people to eat at the Jaycee Barn where the event took place. SHS cheerleaders rooting for a state championship

This year's Sweetwater High School varsity cheerleaders are getting the chance to do something no other SHS cheer squad has done since 1997.
They are showing their support for the first Sweetwater football team since that year — and only the third in school history — to still be unbeaten through the first 12 games of the season. The Mustangs put their 12-0 record on the line at 2 p.m. today when they face Vernon in the regional round of the Class 4A, Division II playoffs at Mineral Wells' Ram Stadium.

Man dies in early morning fire

A Sweetwater man died Friday morning when a fire engulfed four apartments at Jack Lambert Drive. The Sweetwater Fire Department received a call about 6:30 a.m. on Friday morning about the apartment fire. The fire began in a common attic of one of the middle apartments, but the cause of the fire is still unknown and fire marshals are being sent to investigate. All other apartment residents escaped the blaze safely. All four apartment roofs were burned off and the interior of each apartment received smoke and water damage as well.
