County preparing time capsule

At the Monday morning meeting of the Nolan County Commissioners, discussion was held on a time capsule for the Nolan County Courthouse.
Precinct 3 Commissioner Tommy White explained that they have been thinking about this project for some time. In order to fill the capsule, citizens are encouraged to bring a small item, such as a coin or business card.
Items can be brought now up until February 28 to Jerry Hunt in the County Judge's office. The size of the time capsule will depend on how many items are submitted.

Texas Transportation Commission approves funding for Nolan County project

AUSTIN — In an ongoing effort to improve safety, the Texas Transportation Commission recently approved nearly $424,000 for a project to install additional safety lighting on I-20 at US 84 in Nolan County.
Willis Electric Co., Inc. of Abilene was awarded the project, which will add lighting to about three miles of roadway in the area. Work is expected to begin this spring.

On Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, the Nolan County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a burglary that occurred at a residence located in the 400 block of South Elm Street in Roscoe.
It was reported that sometime between Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013, at 8 a.m. and Sunday, Jan. 5, 2014, at 4 p.m., an unknown person(s) used force to enter the residence. Once inside, the suspect(s) took two jewelry boxes containing an assortment of jewelry.

Fires on red flag warning day

The Sweetwater Fire Department responded to fires in Nolan County on Sunday, which was deemed a red flag warning day. The high winds and dry conditions were the cause of the elevated fire danger.
This photo shows firefighters responding to a fire on Ragland Street in Sweetwater that firefighters believe began with a lit cigarette butt that might have been thrown out of a vehicle traveling on the street. The occupants of the home did not notice the fire or smell the smoke, but a neighbor alerted the family and authorities and everyone in the home was safe.

Trustees honored during School Board Recognition Month

January is School Board Recognition Month and Sweetwater is joining other districts across the state to thank these community volunteers for their commitment and contributions to our public schools.
“School board members serve countless hours working to make public education the best it can be for every child,” said Mr. Terry Pittman, Sweetwater ISD Superintendent.

Several speak at Cline Shale quarterly luncheon

Various activity within the Cline Shale region was discussed at Friday’s quarterly luncheon of the Cline Shale Alliance, held at the Nolan County Coliseum.
Eric Norton with the Roseland Oil and Gas Directory shared that although he saw the activity in North Dakota in 2009--in which projections were off the charts, covered the development in Pennsylvania, and has been involved in the Permian Basin for the past six years, the Cline Shale appears to be much larger.

Medical Reserve Corps meetings

The Big Country Medical Reserve Corps (BCMRC) will have two meetings on Monday, January 13 at the training room at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
The first meeting will be held at 6 p.m. for the advisory board, while the following meeting at 7 p.m. is a general board meeting. New members will have their ID pictures taken, and Joni Coons will be speaking about CPR.
The BCMRC would also like to announce that from this point on, meetings will be held on the first Thursday of every month.
